My 97 SE's engine is missing/sputtering!!! HELP!!!!

I have been having a run of bad luck with my 97 SE 5 speed. To make a long story short, my car has been missing/studdering for a while when the engine is under load. In the meantime as if my problems aren't bad enough, the CEL came on and when I took it in to get worked on, the Andretti Nissan said an "evaporator" or something like that was bad and that threw a code. Also, the Knock Sensor code was activated. In addition, they found out I had a bad fuel pump, evident by hard starts intermittently. So I changed that and put a fuel filter in it. But, it still missed badly.

Well, I thought I'd put plugs in it. So tonight, I did just that and it's still missing. It seems to do it when I roll on the throttle. Cruising down the road seems to work fine. But, if I lug the engine in a higher gear or run the snot out of it, it seems to be missing or sputtering or something. I'm starting to get disgusted with it and am ready to unload the car. Can anyone please suggest anything before I do something stupid?

Thanks!

Use a multimeter and a haynes manual to test out various things such as Ignition Coils, fuel injectors and knock sensor. I'd say that its probably one of those three things.

I'm not sure what a Haynes manual or a multimeter is? Can you give me any further info?

A Haynes Manual is something anyone should have. Its a detailed book on a complete teardown and rebuild of a car with detailed instructions on maintence.

A multimeter is a useful tool in that it test various electronic measurement.

So if your knock sensor was the problem you can look it up in the haynes manual, find out what the resistance should be and check it with the multimeter.

Has anyone ever had this problem! I also just noticed this morning when I tramp the throttle, it hesitates for a split second and sort of makes a sucking sound, but not from the airbox. Vacuum leak? Would that cause the sputtering?

did it help at all when you changed your fuel filter? if it was good for a while you may have to change your fuel filter again. and maybe again until the filter removes all the crap that may be in your gas tank.
