No ABS on a 99 SE Limited??

alright, my friend just bought a 99 se limited maxima and he locked up his tires for a good 5 seconds, and the abs didn't kick in. is it poiable that his car does not have abs? i am telling him that it has to have abs, but he is tellimg me that the dealer said that it was an option on his car. is this true? when i poped the hood, i think that i see the abs lines, but i am not exactly sure what they look like. could someone post a pic of the actual abs unit/lines? any help is appreciated. thanks.

I think ABS became standard in 2000, but I'm not sure.

ABS is an option for 1999. On 2000+, it's standard.

well, under the hood there is not a fuse, but there is a fuse under the dash next to the steering wheel. does that make sense? the abs light does not come on either when the car is started. could it just be that my friend has to buy a fuse?

No I have a '99 SE without ABS. ABS was even an option on SELs.
The fuse box to the left of the steering column always has fuses regardless of whether the option is present or not. The fusible links (relays) in the fuse boxes in the engine bay are only there if the option is on the car.

Check for the second brake line near the back wheel. if there is only one line , then no abs!

Thats interesting. Maybe it was only with Black leather then.

Wait a sec, are your seats heated? Nissan had a weird way of putting packages together.

Easiest way to see is....if there is an ABS light comes on after you start the car. I believe it's beside the low fuel warning light. I got ABS, heated leather, climate control... blah blah blah.

Easiest way to tell, when you start the car, one of the idiot lights, a yellow one, will light up.

99 SEL here with no sunroof, leather, or abs. I think abs was a standalone option in 99.

my 99 SE-L came with no sun roof, no leather, no electric seat adjustments, no heated seats, no ABS, no fancy climate controls, no side impact airbags, no lights on the sun visor mirrors.. but thats ok. these are things that will eventually break down and need costly repairs. and for the $ 18,500 price tag i got it for.. i'm fine with that.

P.S. it did come with the high end Bose system, and 7 original miles.. better than no radio at all!!

You got your car with BOSE, but no;
auto-climate control
leather

How'd you manage that? I Didn't think that was possible.

Strippie SE limited no options at all except for 200 watt BOSE, SE-L floor mats, titanium trim (includes the titanium finished gauges, badges, and rims), SE-L badges on the fenders..and the cloth seats have that lumbar manual lever.

P.S. no TCS either.

when you stomp on the brakes hard you'll know if there is ABS or not right? or am i wrong? aren't you supposed to feel the kickback (thumping) from ABS?

dang.. now i'm not even so sure if my car has ABS.. haha. (got mine used)

if you jam the brakes, they will lock up and release constantly...and you'll hear a loud banging sound, you can't miss it.

anyways, i got a 99 limited
with no leather, sunroof or spoiler
got heated seats, climate control, VLSD, and abs.

To me Anti-Lock Brakes is a life saver. My old car was a Ford Thunderbird, with no ABS. I totaled this car (my fault), and the accident def. wouldnt have happened if I had ABS. That is why I wanted it on my next car(99 SE-L with ALLLLLL options except red, I have Sterling Mist, but I like the red a lot).
Well, good luck finding it,
Dan

This site -- http://www.geocities.com/jgadlage/1999max.html ,has a good list of the different options available in different years. They have no information on the SE-L though.

The way the options were packaged changed from year to year. In a few years ABS was part of the 'cold weather package' (heated seats, heated mirrors, etc.). Other years it looks like it was a stand alone option.
