joining the Navy in january and parking my max..preventive maintenance?

I am joining the Navy in January, and I will have to park my max for quite a while. Probably a year or more. What kind of preventive maintenance do I need to do to make sure it will be ok. I'm gonna leave it at my parent's house, and I think I can get my dad to drive it at least once a week. I say I think because he just bought a brand new Lexus LS-300 5 spd, and I think he has spent more time in that car than in the damn house. I'm gonna buy a tarp to cover my car, but I don't really know what I'm looking for. Anyone have any idea about brands or such for tarps.

Well, flush the coolant and put new one.

Then do oil change--after 3 months it goes acidic and ruin your seals and valves: a potential $3000 repair

check tire air pressure

wash/dust car

and, er, tranny fluid change???

cleaning butterfly openings at throttle body?

and air filter change.

That's what I do periodically...hope this helps

Also make sure that it doesn't sit in one spot for to long
or you will get flat spots on your tires.

Ideally, spend the $40 on jackstands and put the car on them. Otherwise overinflate the tires. Also, use some Stabil in the gas tank so it doesn't gum up and clog your system when you get back.

Get a car cover and tell him to drive it weekly.
I should be good to go.
Navy huh. You should have joined the Air Force.

If your dad drives it once a week, you should be fine. Will it be garaged? You can keep a car in the garage for a LONG time and it will still fire right up. Believe me I know. My family has a GMC conversion van which we drive like twice a year. It sits for months at a time, and when we drive it, it starts right up, the first time! As long as you maintain your car, it will always work well.

As for the 3 months and oil turning acidic, I'm not sure that is true. I bet you can go a whole year without changing the oil if the car is driven a couple miles once a week. The acid only builds up when the additives in the oil break down. Driving the car a little bit (like maybe 10 miles) once a week is not enough to break the additives down over the course of a year.
