Trouble Shifting into 3rd gear

I've noticed lately that 3rd gear has been a lot tougher for me to shift into than it used to be. Occasionally i get some grinding when the shifter refuses to go into 3rd gear. This only happens on occasion, but hasn't happened with any other gear and I'm a little worried, what could be wrong with my tranny and what could I do to find out exactly what the problem is?

How do you grip the shifter?

I normally just hold my hand directly over it and push it up into third. I know about the techniques that David B. has discussed and they do work, but what worries me is that sometimes it goes into 3rd very easily and more recently it has been much more difficult to complete the shift.

Okay, next time when you have problems upshifting into 3rd, double clutch and see if the shifter slips into gear. If yes then you might have a synchro problem.

yup thats what happens, it isn't a terrible problem but does happen every now and then. What would it require to fix this? i'm guessing its going to be pretty expensive.

Well, the only transmission overhauls I've ever paid for were for automatic transmissions. They have run from $750 to $2000 parts and labor, depending on the make and how bad the tranny is. Manual transmissions I do myself.

hehe...4k RPM at 60 used to be like, normal for my acura, in top gear (well, actually 70mph). Sometimes I miss aggressive gearing, but most times not

A-Ron - hit up the local tranny shop and ask them what it'd run. I don't know how much a new synchro costs part-wise, but a tranny rebuild...probably somewhere around $1000? Dunno for sure.

I don't think I'd rebuild it. Just find a used one and drop it in there. You should be able to find the tranny for $300-500.

i don't know if it would come down to me actually having to replace the whole transmission, that would be a last resort, but if I did i guess I'd be giving up the LSD that came w/my infiniti 5speed
