For anyone who cares (no turbo info inside) B&M Tranny Cooler in colder weather info

This morning it was 28 degrees in my town of Franklin, MA so I figured Bill and a lot of you auto guys would be interested in knowing how the tranny cooler reacts to freezing temperatures and not allowing overcooling.

I have the:

130-70264 SuperCooler 24,000 GVW (11'' x 6'' x 1.5'') - $49.99

I intalled it this summer being that it was so hot and I didn't want to overheat my tranny no more than I have in the past with dragging and tons of highway running.

Anyways, I let the car warm up for about a minute and started on my way. The onramp to the major highway is about 2 blocks from my home so by the time I entered the ramp, I still wasn't at normal operating temperature. The car shifted as it would when your autotranny fluids are still cold (just a small jerk when shifting). After normal operating temps were a acheived, the tranny shifted a smooth as silk. This means that the bypass valve within the Supercooler is doing its job even though my particular cooler is designed for a load of 24,000 GVW.

My supercooler is positioned in front of the radiator, right behind my valance opening (behind my aftermarket fogs) to get the most unrestricted airflow.

In the past, coolers have caused problems with shifting in cold weather and I've heard of drivers blocking the cooler with cardboard to allow the heat to build up so the tranny would shift smoothly. The problem is gone with the B&M Supercoolers. Hope this helps with anyone concerned about using a cooler in cold weather.

I have the B&M cooler too and I've never worried about overcooling. I run Redline D4 ATF and I think that stuff flows well no matter what the temperature.

How do you think it'd affect the car in say, one of our canadian blizzards? Sounds like it'd be probable to still be safe.

You guys do see more over the drop-dead cold weather than we will see in the NE but I'm confident you will be fine. It's not neccessary to get the one I bought though. Jime is running the say cooler and he hasn't complained about it.

As long as synthetic ATF is used, it is less likely to be an issue. Also, taping or placing a rubber band around some cardboard in front of the cooler will help make the cooler "inefficient" and won't overcool the fluid......

well assuming people arent racing in the middle of winter and beating on the auto trans, placing a cardboard infront of your cooler wont really make that much of a difference.... thats just my assesment of the situation.....

anyone else care to comment ?

Some auto transmissions have an internal thermostat that keeps transmission fluid from circulating to an external cooler (such as the one in the radiator) until the transmission warms up. Maxima transmissions don't have one?

The Maxima auto transmission is not one of them.

B&M's SuperCooler series of tranny coolers is the only major tranny cooler maker I'm aware of that includes a viscosity driven "valve" that prevents cold fluid from flowing across the entire plate surface of the cooler.

I thought I asked you.

Is that a sore spot or something you don't want to talk about? Are your friends making so much fun of you that chrome re-establishes your manhood?

NNOOOOO

it is a sore spot when you realize that it is going to cost more in fittings to connect the cooler than the actual cost of the cooler.

i ended up getting fittings at home depot and had to keep the "racing car fittings" as a memento to how much $$ i actually spent..
