Rear strut "gland nut"
Rear strut "gland nut"
I'm in the middle of doing a strut job on my 89. THe car had 140K on it and I think the struts have never been replaced.
Anyway, the fronts went fine - the rears are a PAIN! I did my 93, and didn't have any problems that I needed help on. It wasn't impossible seeming.
I cannot get the "gland nut" off. Its permarusted to the insert holder. I had a shop tell me to just cut the top off, the inserts are designed to be smaller and the insert holder is threaded like 3 inches down. Does this sound familier to anyone?

Re: Rear strut "gland nut"
you shouldn't have to do any cutting and I would avoid that if at all possible
get a vice to hold the base of the strut and get a big pipe wrench to try to get the gland packing nut out

or if its rusted enough, it'll break......
or if its rusted enough, it'll break......
if that breaks then break out the dremel and you'll be fine.
try getting it off like this..
clamp the assembly to the vice
set pipe wrench on it..or get the right tool/socket/wrench
either hammer or slide big breaker bar over tool and crank down.
helps to have someone stablize the vice...it's hard to get off..but it'll move with some work.
go eat your wheaties.
