Police,Maxima Drivers, do you know how to drive on the highway?

I am about to pull my hair out at all the people who drive slow in the left lane. They cause traffic, and force people to make unsafe lane changes to get around them.

Police, do you have a policy about people driving this way. Most of the time when I see traffic I can pinpoint the idiot who is blocking it in the slow lane, do I have to talk to state legislature about getting the freakin death penalty for morons who arn't paying attention and causing traffic and accidents. In texas they have been good about posting 'slower traffic yield right' (which I am going to make a window banner that people can read in their mirrors.)

Maxima Drivers, were you taught in drivers ed that the left lane is for passing, did you just know that this was the highway policy, or were you unaware that this is how you drive?

I teach an early morning Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology class at a University in OKC that I was almost late for because this moron was driving ten miles under the speed limit in the left lane, causing a traffic pile up that you could see was caused by him (in front of his car there was no traffic, behind was a mass of cars.) When I got their (I was still steaming from the incodent because it is a regular occurence here) I gave an extra credit quiz for what the left lane of a highway is for, about 90% of my students got extra credit, but we all got a good laugh about how stupid people are when it comes to driving, and how Oklahoma drivers are totally oblivious when it comes to highway safety.

What do I have to do to spread the message, run for congress?

i have a tendency to sit in the left lane, but generally when i'm doing above 90, otherwise passing only. is that okay, congressman?

if there is a slow poke in the left lane you can try european style passing and keep your left blinker on maybe they will get the hint to move over...flashing also helps. If that doesn't work i like the aggressive roar forwards up behind them and then back off and see if they move over. If all else fails spend $200 and get a blinding whelen 90watt strobe kit and get that f-er to pull over.

Highway driving, left lane....

I think those who stay in the left lane, even when traffic is on their tail looks at it like..... well, like an old man/women who's sitting in their favorite chair, warm/cozy, slippers on, and full from a good meal.

I'm comfortable here.... let them(we who want to pass) go around!

I know a few of those drivers and they'd rather stay in the fast lane than deal with merging traffic. unless it is a truck or something else big behind them, only then will they get over.

Many people are ignorant of the law. Here is a copy of Oklahoma State Statutes regarding this issue:

§47-11-309.

Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked
lanes for traffic, the following rules in addition to all others
consistent herewith shall apply.

1. A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within
a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until the driver
has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety and
then given a signal, not less than the last one hundred (100) feet
traveled by the vehicle, of his intention to change lanes.

2. Upon a roadway which is divided into three lanes, a vehicle shall
not be driven in the center lane except when overtaking and passing
another vehicle where the roadway is clearly visible and such center
lane is clear of traffic within a safe distance, or in preparation for
a left turn or where such center lane is at the time allocated
exclusively to traffic moving in the direction the vehicle is
proceeding and is signposted to give notice of such allocation.

3. Upon a roadway which is divided into four or more lanes, a vehicle
proceeding at less than the maximum posted speed, except when reduced
speed is necessary for safe operation, shall not impede the normal
flow of traffic by driving in the left lane. Such vehicle shall be
driven in the right-hand lane except when overtaking and passing
another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for
a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.

4. Official signs may be erected directing slow-moving traffic to use
a designated lane or designating those lanes to be used by traffic
moving in a particular direction regardless of the center of the
roadway and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of every
such sign.

It is like that in Los Angeles too. Traffic can me manageable. If people would just prepare for their commutes, traffic would flow more freely. We have idiots in the fast lane that change lanes on the very last minute in order to exit a particular offramp. In that process they have to slow down considerably just to switch lanes and affecting traffic flow in each lane it enters. Then there are those who are 20 miles away from their destination and yet they still drive the #4 lane (rightmost lane), hampering people who are trying to merge in. Lets not forget those people with "weak ankles" that merge onto the highway accelerate 1/4 throttle while while everyone else is driving 75mph, causing them to scrub 1/2 of their speed just to accomodate the slow-merging POS

The wasted time accumulated in traffic is exponential because there are 100s if not 1000s of idiots who drive with no common sense.

Aside from the geriatrics and tourists, I think these dumb-Fs are aware of what they are doing; they are on a power trip. Based on my observations during my 20k-28k mi/yr commutes, the cars they drive suggest that they are probably the bottom feeder/entry level/unskilled worker who are always hassled by superiors that are 1/2 their age. On the freeway is their time to exert some sort of control onto someone else. Of course that control is holding people back.

Yeah, like Step2kMax said, these people are just comfortable staying in the left lane. My cars are quite comfortable to drive, but I would rather sit in my leather chair in the living room enjoying beer while watching TV instead of wasting my life on the road staring at red taillights.

And then there's surface street traffic...

what i do in those cases is either high beam them, or check for police presense and pass them on the right.

Or.. if i'm unsure, i switch lanes and cruise for a little bit, then pass them and merge in the left lane.

But if they are going pretty fast, over the limit already and I'm looking to go faster, I won't really care much and go around them if there is a chance, i'm not going to bother them about it since they are not doing anything wrong, I am

But passing on the right can get you a ticket
I remember i got pulled over for going fast and simply switching into the right lane, before i had a chance to pass someone a cop car flew by me, merged in like 3 feet from my front bumper and hit the brakes.. I slammed my brakes and then we sat there with him in front of me for 5 minutes. i was like wtf.. no lights on, nothing, is he really pulling me over? so i started moving and then he flashed his lights for a second, so i stop again and pull in front of him, he then says "You got the Hint?" on the loud speaker.. I am puzzled and again, he's like "I hope you got the hint" then he pulls out passes me, makes a U turn and says "and slow down, you're going to hurt somebody" or some **** like that.... i am glad i didn't get a ticket but then again, i did nothing wrong.. he was trying to teach me a lesson but i came pretty close to rear ending the hell out of him...

so the moral of the story is, don't pass on the right

I used to be a police officer in Michigan and Texas, and I agree with you completely. Nothing irritates me more than people driving slow in the left lane, that and people with their tires sticking out way beyond the body of the vehicle. Most states have a law in effect that makes it illegal to drive slow in the left lane, commonly referred to as "impedding the flow of traffic." I understand it's illegal to pass on the right but it's a catch 22 situation. Someone suggested using the flash to pass method. I've tried this many times and it never works. This problem seems to be most prevalent in TX and OK. I don't know why maybe these cowboys need remedial drivers ed. (just kidding guys').

Come to NJ; New York drivers (in general) routinely cruise in the left lane. The left lane-fast lane concept doesn't exist in NY apparently. (Of course in NYC, the 'lane' concept doesn't appear to exist either.)

i think that us /some nyer doing 85 on the left lane is already pushing it and our gas mileage. also needless to say the sate troopers ... no way am i going over 80... on occassion 85-90..

i found a remedy to the left lane dilemma. i don't use it anymore, i took up driving on the far right lane (the granny lane).
it is most of the time less travelled, during non rush hour traffic, and i can usually go over 65 mph running stealth. if i get a slow poe coming up, i signal and pass on the middle lane. it really works for me.
you would be surprised as to how many people i actually pass that are travelling on the passing left lane.
i've noticed you got either Yo-yos on their cell fones or degenerates going at extreme speeds riding up people's bumpers.. i feel very unsafe on that side of the highway..

give it a try and see if it works for you.

Check local laws... it is NOT illegal to pass on the right in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and might not be in your area.

BOZOnPJs: I agree. During rush hour I drive as far right as possible and usually pass more cars than pass me. The trick is to know when to merge left because of approaching onramps, then quickly get back right again after the onramp cluster-f***.

In WA State, it is illegal to flash your lights at anyone. You can "blink" your lights at them (turn lights on and off quickly), but flashing them with your High Beams is illegal, I got a ticket for it once.

I read a statistic online from NTSB once that said 60% of freeway accidents are caused by slow people, because people are caused to try to pass them.

in the Bay Area (CA) it seems like the far right lane is the fast lane.. everyone goes REALLY slow up there (65-75 in the 'fast' lane) so for some reason everyone just goes fast in the right lane

I hate the people who cruise in the fastlane and wait for someone to ride on their bumper before moving over or not moving over at all

I also hate people who tailgate ME when I'm leaving a safe distance between the car in front of me

You all don't understand - if you drive in the left lane you don't have to be awake, you never have to change lanes (until 100ft before your exit), and going slow there gets you great gas mileage because the fastness of the lane pushes you along!

I am glad to read i am not the only who gets ****ed at losers driving slow in the fast lane.

After i try everything and they dont move, i turn on the HIDs and fogs (they are aimed HIGH) and wait for about 10 sec when they move over. Its that simple and it works!

I just go back from two week in my home country, England. I can tell you that lane discipline there is a million times better...

It is very strictly adhered to;
- Everyone drives in lane one (left lane in the UK) UNLESS
- You can drive in the second (middle) lane to pass someone in the first lane, but then you must move back to the first lane UNLESS
- You are passing someone in the middle lane, whereby you can use the 3rd (and 4th etc) lane, but must move back to the left ASAP.

The lane discipline was so good, that during a 250 mile journey from Edinburgh to Huddersfield, I was able to travel at a very healthy average speed of 95mph (while journey took 2hrs 41mins - do the math) and NOT ONCE did I get slowed down in the 'fast lane'. (and before you lecture me, the roads and cars over there can easily and safely support that speed - my wife actually slept the whole time we were driving that fast)

In Ohio there is no rule against undertaking (passing on the 'slow' side) so people have no reason to use the rightmost lanes. It's nearly impossible to speed here because you're gonna get caught up behind a slow driver every mile or so. These folks will not react any any signalling or stimulus at all - you MUST pass on the right, even if they are 10mph under the limit.

Yeah, but the problem is cops never actually do anything about those slow drivers in the passing lane. First of all, most are just sitting there on the side waiting to catch speeders, and the ones that are actually on the highway moving, they're either going to the coffee shop or hoping to catch speeders/careless drivers (the ones that weave in and out everywhere). It seems to be a priority thing. It seems like they just don't give the slow passing lane drivers priority in pulling them over. I feel like they think it's not worth their time.
Who knows...I've just never ever seen anyone get pulled over for driving slow in the passing lane.

Slow Drivers Never Die

Oh I hate those villainous slow drivers that block the progress of mankind.

Theirs is the deviltry that causes cancer, holocausts, global disasters and continuous warfare.

Let them move to the right, and be forgotten.

My bro got caught trying to cut these slow villains blocking both lanes...speeding, the cop said.

And supposedly if he did 85, then the cop did what, like 115 to catch his 300zx???

He should thank my bro b/c not running away and smoking the **** of the sh!tty crown vic.

I can totally agree with 90% of this thread. But you guys forgot a few REALLY annoying things.

First, PARALLEL DRIVERS. You know, those idiots who drive RIGHT BESIDE a slow-moving vehicle in the right lane. They take up the position in the left lane and make googly-eyes or talk sign language to the other drivers. This leads me to my second gripe...

TRUCKERS who parallel drive in anticipation of a merge in traffic. To avoid being passed in the lane that ends/merges, they drive VERY slow right besid another truck, all the while looking over and watching each other **** it as they go 25 in a 65. It sucks to be in traffic behind this, and sucks almost as much to be going the OTHER way and see a wide expanse of open road in the opposite direction, only to see that the bottleneck preceeding the 1/2 to 2 miles of open road is caused by 2 truckers who THINK that they need to merge right now. I always FUME, because it is UNLAWFUL to travel below 45 miles per hour (or 20 MPH below the posted limit) unless conditions dictate the reduced speed. I have NEVER seen one pulled over, but I always want to call *77 and report it.

My last gripe is unrelated: Parents who do not belt their children (in seatbelts) should lose their licenses. Or their chldren. No warnings, no fines.

Power of HID
I agree with you about getting p**sed at slow drivers in the left lane. But high beaming someone can make it worse also, what if that person decides to slow down more to p**s you off more, what can you do about it?

What p**ses me off most is that I'll be going at a high speed in the left lane (80+) and get tail-gated or high beamed to move over, wtf, I'm already 25 over the speed limit and I won't move over especially cause I got high beamed.

Best thing to do is just find a way around them by passing on the right.

My last gripe is unrelated: Parents who do not belt their children (in seatbelts) should lose their licenses. Or their chldren. No warnings, no fines.
But if they don't safely secure their children, perhaps their contribution to the gene pool will stop.

True...but potentially at the expense of one of us. We are not perfect; some of us have accidents. A routine fender-bender can become vehicular hohicide when an unbelted kid becomes a projectile.

Plus, it is then on the heart and conscience of the person at fault (not always the parents) if the kid gets hurt or killed.

These folks will not react any any signalling or stimulus at all - you MUST pass on the right, even if they are 10mph under the limit.
No kidding to this one. Ohio drivers, especially South West Ohio are complete morons. I learned to drive in Chicago and it slays me how these drivers act like a bunch of nOObs. I have seen people practically cause 3 accidents tryin to get to the left hand lane from the onramp and then proceed to drive 50 in a 55 zone. Do that in Chicago and they will be callin the wagon to get your body.

My other gripe, since we be gripin, is when people turn on turn signal and ASSUME it gives right of way. People will flick the blinker, pry themselves into an unsafe spot and wonder why you get mad at them....Hey I used my turn signal...SO...ITS NOT A RIGHT OF WAY CARD.

Well you may think 80+ is "fast enough", but someone else may deem 70 to be "fast enough". What if you get caught behind that person going 70 in a 65 and he refuses to move because of that same attitude?

If someone is behind me and wants to go faster, I always let him go, no matter if I'm going 65, 70, 85, or 110.

People who drive too slow in the fast lane is definitely a pet peeve of mine. The reason why people are forced to weave in and out of traffic and create a dangerous situation for everyone is because of lack of proper lane discipline.

I also tend to do a lot of my highway driving in the right lane (the "slow" lane), as it tends to be the least populated. I realize that it's dangerous to pass on the right, but I am very alert when I drive and I also have the shoulder as an emergency runoff.

Exactly no matter how fast your going the left lane is for pacing, as long as your doing that your fine, but if someone is trying to pass you get out of their way. You have no idea what their situation might be whether it be a pregnancy, or some one they know might be in an emergency. But for the most part it is just common curtousy (and shows that you are aware of your surroundings unlike the geriatrics who are intently holding the wheel at ten and two while going twenty below the speed limit to be cautious, or the soccer mom in her SUV getting into an argument on her cell phone.)

One guy posted on here about a fast trip in England, my claim to fame was the trip from Dallas to OKC in an hour and a half. Just before Denton I was passed by a 3000GT doing about 100 (this is when I had my eclipse in my wild a crazy days.) Being the hard nosed driver I was (I hate it when people pass me) I kept up with him to make good time. While passing through Denton a 300z joined in the chase. We went no less than 120 the whole way, and in some areas I was reading 135 on the speedo. My hands were sweating the whole way and I was just praying the 3000GT had radar. I'll never ever do that again, but we all waved to each other as we exited knowing that was a once in a life time trip.

TIP - to get someone out of the passing lane, flash your brights at them, if this does not work pass them, then get in front of them. Now spray your window washer fluid to your hearts content because it is going to soak and annoy that @ss in the fast lane (you'll see him put on his winshiled wipers), if that doesn't work it's getting close to halloween, go find a pumpkin.

left lane

In Canada, you get a ticket and 2 points for slowing down the left lane.

I hate people like that too.

THIS IS GREAT READING!

The more people that read this thread, the less idiots there will be out there.

World of Wheels (a Canadian car magazine had an column on "dog-in-manger" syndrome, where the author described idiots who were doing things to irritate him, intentionally or not. I'm trying to get a copy so I can post it on here. My goal is to have copies of it in my car, and a high-lighter, so I can give the offender a copy of the article, indicating where he "fuc&ed up"... lol

That being said, here are a few of my gripes (in addition to what has already been posted):

1. A$$-clowns who don't look to judge your oncoming speed before pulling in to your lane to pass a "slower than them" vehicle, causing you to lose all your speed and momentum

2. Trucks that pull out to pass... on a ****!NG hill!!! or on the only stretch of open road that occurs in the past 10 KM thereby preventing all who have been waiting to pass to have to wait for the NEXT extra lane.

3. People who race to the end of the 'merge' lane, and then try to pull in to traffic. I.e. when an onramp or highway connects to another, and they go right to the end before pulling in. This ONLY causes traffic to slow down.
As a solution to this, i've taken to what I call "tearing along the dotted line", where i sit halfway between these two lanes, effectively blocking people from passing me, until after the merge ends. (I only do this when traffic is already crawling as a result of these idiots slowing it down).

Hope this thread gets added as a sticky, or at least, a summary of all the "infractions" that idiots commit to make our "speed-racer" lives miserable

Mike

p.s. I love that windshield spray idea. I am MOST definitely going to do that (as I know how much it pi$$es me off to have the idiot in front of me spray theirs all over my car).
