I'll never understand.... I click on the link for "also consider" to check the competition. Looking at that car's "also consider" list is the Altima. That happens for all three "also consider" cars for Maxima.

So, for which cars is the Maxima an "also consider"? I couldn't find it in any list... only the Altima, and even that wasn't very easy to find.

Yeah, that's kinda odd. My take is that, for a long time and with
the exception of the Sentra, Nissan has produced "tweener" cars. The
Maxima is rarely mentioned in comparisons with the Accord, Taurus,
Camry, 3 series, and so on. It sort of stands alone because the
cheapest version of it is more than the cheapest version of all but
the 3. Size wise, it's always been bigger than this but smaller than
that. I guess the Altima and Maxima offerings have never fit neatly
into the box. Now though, the new Altima is aimed squarely at the
Camry/Accord crowd so maybe they'll get a bit more press.

Remember the redesigned jelly-bean Altima being described as "The
New Beetle" and a "Cult car"? Somehow it didn't quite fit in a line
that clearly made it an Accord/Camry competitor. It was as if owning
one made you some part of an all-too-well concealed secret.

I personally liked the remarks at one of the 2k2 auto shows where
Ghosn said, "Not something for everyone; but everything to some", or
something very similar to that. It was a brilliant description of
what the Nissan non-truck offerings are and the direction the
company is going...IMHO.

The 2k3 Accord got better scores it looks like. At least you 2k2/2k3 guys have bragging rights over us older maximas. We only scored a 25.
The maxima really is in it's own class. Do you compare it to the Honda Accord or the Acura TL? It just doesn't seem to fit in, but that's what makes it special.

err 25 out of a possible 35. Which would give it a score of ~71. 4th gens scored the same for some strange reason.

Maxima has always been in its own class, but at one time it did have a direct competitor the Cressida. The Max can take on lower end cars and higher end cars that is a good thing!

But it just seems like hondas and toyotas always get higher ratings than nissan. And their always noted to be a best buy, when I don't think either compare to maxima in power, passeger space or looks. It just seems unfair because alot of consumers purchase their vehicle by what these consumer guide rate the cars and I just think nissan is getting a bad wrap...

dumm

And I read in car and driver that supposedly 190 VQ is slower than friggin' Camry V6 or Accord V6.

That's sick blasphemy. I smoked like 3 from each category, and I drive an auto!!!

I raced vs my bro's stick 1992 300ZX NA and he was only able to put 2 cars on me, 0-100 mph, stock vs stock.

Nissan is as reliable as Hondas and Toyotas...and remember, Maxima is the top of the line Nissan, straight from the Japanese factory there in Japan. (import, duh)

As compared to Accords/Camrys built here in US (semi-domestic?)
I don't understand why many Max driver go around without modding.

Well back in 95 the VQ auto with C&D put in a 0-60 in 7.3 and beat the Camry V6 and was the fastest auto in that test which is virtually the same as it was then. The 95-99 VQ auto is probably about .3-.7 faster than the 200hp Accord V6 98-02 and Camry V6 from 92-current.

I think it's the price segment that the Max is placed in that makes it seem invisible to the Camry/Accord comparisons and doesn't get recommended.
I just took 2k3 MSRP from autonet.ca and prices are in CDN $

Maxima GXE $33,300
Accord LX-V6 $29,000
Camry LE-V6 $27,000

Maxima GLE $37,000
Accord EX-V6 $32,500
Camry XLE-V6 $32,615

You can only compare the Accord/Camry to a Max if there the V6 models, but the pricing puts the Max in a whole other pricing segment. A GXE is $4-6K more than the LX-v6 and LE-V6. Consumer reports and reviewers can't really recommend a car if its $4k-6K more but they'll recommend a car that may be $4-6K cheaper.
From the pricing scheme, I don't think Nissan really set their cross-hairs on the Accord or Camry, it kinda did it's own thing.
But hey, the Max still outsells the V6-Camry and V6-Accord combined...

Flashbacks....

I felt like i was back in Physical Therapy school....

it looks like all the answer were right, but they still failed the test. Nothing but kudos for Quietness, but only a 5?20+ mpg gets a 5?

Not in the US... The camry is like 4:1 here.

But that makes owning a max that much more special. And I can take 99% of V6 camrys.

If you want the closest to an unbiased report, look at Consumer Reports, nothing else.

Yeah I know it's bull. Car&Driver got a 0-60 in Six seconds flat. "Consumer Guide" drivers must really suck!
