Was the car completely level?

Has it been filled/changed before? ...because it is possible to overfill if you jack up the front and fill it through the fill plug. Hopefully not more than 1/2 a quart came out or there's something fishy there...

it was likely filled the last time with the car parked on an incline...which can be a big difference....perhaps a half quart...?? The extra oil likely didn't hurt anything unless you spent a LOT of time running at very high engine speeds...(i used to design transfer cases for large trucks, so I know what I am talking about)....the trans would run warmer and cost you a little power from having the extra in there.

make sure you replace it with a GL4 spec gear oil (Mobil 1 gear lube is GL5)....which is not a typical off the shelf oil at the average auto-parts store. GL5 gear oil will "not protect" the bronze parts in your transmission. Using synthetic in the Maxima trans is a given. AMSOIL and Redline both make a GL4 oil...I think Mobil does too, but you probably have to order it from their web site. takes 5 quarts.

good luck,
John

hmmm...probably was installed on an incline or something.....and a little less than half a quart came out...right now my car is on a incline.....i half half the car on the side walk, and the other half on the street, but the front left is up on a jack stand. its not that off, but im kinda confused now as to put the same as b4, or to put less....the oil was a light brown color, so im guessing it probably was there for a while.

Hey Killer,

I agree with what the other guys have said. If it's of any help, goto my How To Change M/T Tranny Fluid page. I hope it helps you. There are lots of detailed pics/comments there.

Drain your tranny box as much as possible. Do your re-fill with the car level. Any excess you pour in should automatically drain out on its own from the Fill Hole.

Good luck!

I think I tried with a 12mm open-ended wrench....but the bolt wouldn't budged!! So I took the sensor off which was ton-loads easier. I did use a small flathead screwdriver to pop it off. Mine wasn't "stuck" in place. I'd suggest that approach.

i dont wanna take chances with getting a leak or anything....there is some silicone that is arouns that sensor, and if i were to pull it off, i would have to reseal it up....have you cheaked for any leaks around the sensor?? Its a more of a pain in the *** by removing the olt, but the precaution is worth it...

Fair enough. Though I didn't notice any silicone/sealant around my sensor when I removed it & I had the underneath of the car pretty well-lit. I'll check things out this weekend.

btw, my drain bolt was starting to get a bit rounded & I didn't want to make the bolt worse by fighting it more. What lousy placement for a drain bolt!!

I'd try the normal drain method first, but I can't think of any reason why it would be harmful to drain through the sensor hole. At worst you break the sensor and have to replace it.
