Drove a Stock 96 5spd yesterday, definitly different

Hey guys, I got to drive a stock SE 5spd yesterday, not that this is special but It was alot different than mine, You could feel the gears better in the transmission and the clutch was alot lighter, but the major difference was in acceleration, where as this one was smooth all the way up to red line mine has a surge of power at around 4k, is this due to mods or is there something wrong with my car? My car seems faster but I'm begining to wonder if it isn't just because my car kind of burst forwards at 4k. BTW I have an intake and a Aftermarket Muffler.

Thanks for any inputs,

Ryan

What type of Intake... that might cause you're "surging" b/c it's getting better air flow maybe???

I don't know but this may be the case. Before I changed to the Stillen Intake, my car was smooth to redline, but after I got the intake, it's just a different car. The throttle reacts better.... at times.

It's a Weapon R Dragon, I was thinking that it was surging because of better airflow also but I'm not real sure, it's just been so long since my car was stock that I don't remember how it felt.

W/ Different Intakes, I guess different things happen. For ex, the Place Racing intake is suppose to give you better lower end performance, but you lose top end.

Stillen gives you better top end, but not as good low end. I guess that's how it goes.

With stock, that is how Nissan wanted the engine to perform for the every day driving. So it would be smooth all the way through the RPM range. But, w/ a newer intake, you're right that Weapon R should give you better breathing at the higher RPM's

Exhaust mods tend to free up the top end. Also, the stock car, like mine, was very linear throughout its rpm band. Mods kindof non-linearized things. Short intakes, like POP, JWT, Stillen, etc lose the linearity more than intakes like the CAI.

The stock engine is designed to provide good, smooth low end power, which is where the average driver does most of his driving. Generally speaking, most mods trade some low rpm power for high rpm gains. So it is not unusual to notice a surge of power in modded cars as you climb in rpm, especially from about 3 krpm onward. The more mods you have, the more the engine comes alive at higher rpm.
