How long did your stock muffler last?

Mine's developed a rust hole on the passenger side of the canister. I've read that there are several layers to go before it gets loud.

Just picked up my Vibrant muffler last night but I'd thought I'd wait until the muffler rusts through but not sure how much longer. Btw I've had my car since Aug.'97.

140,000 so far, but it needs replaced badly. No sound so far, but it's falling apart. I'm trying to figure out what to replace it with.

Whoa, sounds like another year or two for me then! In that case I may not want to wait that long!

I've had my car since August 95 and the muffler has several large rust areas, but no total penetration yet...

I had 40K miles when I swapped it for the 5th gen muffler. I'm in sunny Southern California so my muffler looks like it's new. No rust spots, discolor marks, scratches...it's just beautiful. It's taking up garage space, so I just might sell it soon.

I just changed mine at 150,000km - but it was the flanges where the "cat back" pipe and the muffler meet that let go and I had to replace both the muffler and the pipe as a result .

Having said that, you've got a long way to go - not much salt on the roads in the lower mainland in the winter - unlike southern Ontario...

Maximamoose, you're in PA though, reknown for Bad weather. I went to school by Pitt, and the salt just eats right through everything. Undercarriage, Mufflers, Cats, Dogs, anything. I bet you'll have to get one at some point.... just to give you hope if you wanted another one

I swapped my muffler for a 2k2 muffler lets say around June. It is a 98 Maxima that was released around 8/97 or so. It was starting to rust is some spots prettty bad but not actually coming through yet. I figure with my 2k2 muffler I can now not worry about it until 2006

I had my muffler for 45,000 miles, then switched it with a GReddy EVO catback.

KrZyMaX - I think he is looking for people who swapped it due to rust more than performance or aftermarket look.

I'm in NY. I just swapped my original muffler out last week with 141k miles on it. It was still in pretty good condition actually. The support bars were pretty rusty but the main body of the muffler wasn't too rusted at all. Probably could have lasted another year or two.

Probably due to the fairly light winters we've had here the past few years.

All depends on your local weather..

If you already have a replacement ready and have a hole in the original one, why wait? Go ahead and change it.

Where are you people from? I'm in NJ, but we have had fairly mild winters recently so mine seems to be in pretty good shape with 46K miles. Am I not the only one that WANTS it to rust out, so I can have a good reason to get an aftermarket exhaust?

hm... wasn't reading the thread very carefully. it's what happens when you're at work... anyway, to make it related to the thread, my tip had a crack in it when i switched exhausts...

funnylittlman, I live about half-hour above Philadelphia. I agree with you that Pittsburgh has some crappy weather, but last year in my area, I think we might have had to salt the roads maybe only a few times. It really wasn't that bad. I was out washing my max about once a week! I just love to keep it clean! Anyway, thanks for the little inspiration there. When it comes time, I will either get a 5th gen muffler, or just spring for a brand new 350z!!!
