locked up AC compressor

locked up AC compressor

I have a 97 SE with 102,000 miles. My AC compressor just crapped out, and I was told that since it is shot, I have to replace it, as well as the drive belts, throttle body, and a bunch of other engine stuff (I realy don't know much about cars so the dealer might be trying to screw me over). They also told me that since I tried to start it after it locked up, I flooded the engine and all the plugs, and the throttle body also have to be replaced. I was wondering if there is any way to bypass the AC altogether, and put a belt on the runs everything but the AC. The dealer I brought it to said that it could not be done. Can it be done?? It is an extra $1000 to repalce the AC compressor, and I would rather not pay that right now.

You can remove the AC compressor from the car and get a different size belt to run the other accy pullies.

Your throttle body has nothing to do with your A/C compressor.

A flooded engine can be started by holding the gas pedal to the floor when cranking it over. The plug will then clear right up after it starts.

Do yourself a favor and never go back to the dealer again. He's taking you for a ride!!!!!

That's exactly what I thought, and two of my buddies (who both know a little (read that a lot) more about engines than me said. The dealer told me that it could not be done because the belt that runs the AC compressor is the same belt that runs the alternator, and unless I relaced it (the AC compressor) the alternator would not run.

Your dealer is wrong. There is a guy on here running his MAX with no A/C compressor in it. I dont remember his name.. You just need to find the right size belt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the right size belt be one that fits a fourth gen without the AC option?? and is there any 4th gen that exists (perhaps a 95 or 96 GXE) without AC??

No such thing as a 4th gen with no A/C Good try tho.. Your gonna have to play around a bit, but you'll get it. Why don't you post a thread asking if somebody has done it and what size belt they used. I bet you get an answer by tomorrow or Monday the latest.

I'll do that. Monday's when I need an answer by because i told them to go ahead and fix it all today. They were going to order all the s**t and put in Monday or Tuesday, as soon as the parts get there. Thanks for the advice bro.
