Porterfield Pads: R4 or R4S??

I'm going to get some porterfields and was just wondering which pads to get? I am not racing with them, just "street" use, and that is what the R4S appears to be for. But if price was not a factor, which pads are really the ones to get? Do the R4's not work as well when cold as the R4S's? Anyone have personal experience between the two?

Thanks

I have R4S and I will stand by them anytime.

Do not use the R4's unless you spend lots of time on the track. Since you said you don't, the R4S is the correct Porterfield pad for you.

The R4 has a higher coefficient of friction, but it's working temperature range is much higher than the R4S, and is high enough that you will rarely see it on the street. If you used the R4, you're cold stopping power would be scary at best and downright dangerous at cooler outside temps.

well my choices are limited but I might go with Hawk HPSs I'm not desperate for stopping power right now not anymore than I have so less dust will save me alot of time cleaning my rims

If you don't want dust don't get HPS or HP+... they make my anthracite wheels look black (look at the sig pic.) That pic was after only a few autoX runs, having washed the wheels the day before. Those were HPS at the time, HP+ don't dust quite as badly but certainly aren't an ideal street pad. Cold performance is less than ideal to say the least.

I second that. I've got the HPS's on the car now, they dust way more than the Porterfield's and are a darker color. I do prefer them stopping wise over the R4S though.

Interesting, I was thinking the same things as it is time for a brake pad change. What brand are the stock ones? Are they worth getting for just normal street use?

i currently use the R4S with their cross drilled. There's some squeel at extreme slow speeds and light pedal use, but nothing to complain about. With R4 you'll probably have a LOT of noise, brake dust and poor performance at cold temps as other members have mentioned. R4 is made for racing which sees temps twice to three times for extended times what ours on the street will ever see. Aren't the R4s cheaper anyway?

HP+s eat rotors AP Racing rotors are more expensive than I want to know

I'm sure they dust alot but I dont think as much as the Porterfields

if you know any pads for the AP racing brakes that dont dust very much feel free to enlighten me!
