finally installed b and y pipe but.....sounds wrong

i installed both today and when i rev my engine to 5000 rpm, it sounds like firecrackers are in my exhaust. when i'm driving normally its kool but then once in a while it sounds like firecrackers. Like those loud annoying civis. What is it? Should I not drive it and go check it or is it normal? By the way I have a stilln y,b,exhaust, 98se 5 speed. Can anyone help me please~! Thanks -Todd

Perhaps your ECU needs a little time to adjust for the better exhaust flow. Did you reset it after you put the pipe in?

no, i didnt reset the ECU but I did reset the battery. Does it take time and is it really necessary for me to reset the ECU?

you should reset it after doing mods to the engine or exhaust

Although it is oft said that you must reset the ECU after mods, I don't think this is necessary at all; you ecu will gradually adjust for optimal performance. Certainly, you will not have problems that just go away with the ecu reset.

I would definitely check for possible contact issues under heavy throttle. Particularly the Y-pipe. Many have had contact problems with the heatshield near the cat, the Y-pipe support bracket or even up front near the crossmember. Take a look under there and shake things with your hand (while the engine is cold)

y-pipe

Thanks A lot guyz. I have a brand new stillen b, y, exhauast and a jimwolf intake. I just drove around my block and the noise dissapeared while i was driving but when i parked and went to 5000 rpm, i mean exactly at 5000 rpm, the firecracker is lit....but not as bad as before. Hopefully if I drive it a couple more times it will totally dissapear. But hey, did it all by myself.....took me 5 hour(hehe) and did something I havent done in a while...which is I accomplished something...well maybe not cuz the y-pipe is lighting firecrackers.

WEIRD!

Went for another drive and that sound was gone when i revved it to 5000 rpm. SO i guess its the ecu programming it. SO is there any need to still reset the ECU?

i didn't reset my ecu when i put my y-pipe on. it should automatically but slowly adjust to the new free flow on the exhuast right?

this is just throwing a guess, but sometimes when you get an exhaust there are materials on the inside that need to be burned off, and you often hear people mension that the exhaust smells, well, maybe you've got an exhaust that made the loud noise before settling in, don't worry about it, but you should still reset your ecu

My y-pipr did the same thing after intitial installation. Except my firecrackers were at 3200 rpm. It'll just go away. May come back occassionally, but will stay gone for the most part.

I have the same... Stillen Y, catback, but with RT cat, Injen. I never had the firecracker problem. But then I reset my ECU everytime I add something engine related.

The noise is related to the cold exhaust pipes. When your exhaust is cold, the cool air around the pipes super cools the exhaust gas therefore causing a "popping" noise. When the pipes warm up, especically on hot days, the exhaust sound is a lot more tame. It has NOTHING to do with the ECU adjusting.

Could it be a backfire? I have a budget ypipe and stillen intake, and I haven't heard a sound like that before. You will eventually have to change the KS, why not do it now if you have extra $$ lying around or just slowly save up for it. Good Luck.
