Stillen Intake Review (very very very long)

The intake itself was a straight forward install. Cutting the wire loom to extend the intake air temperature sensor was the hardest part. I was very unwilling to cut the wire loom, but I did not want to cut and extend the wire either. After cutting the loom and wrapping it all back together, it wasn't as bad as I though. It doesn't bother me anymore that I cut the wire loom. After checking all the clamps, screws and the sensor, I reset my ECM.

I started the car and at idle, the car sounds stock, unless you put your head right above the hood where the filter is. Above the filter through the hood, you hear a cool hissing sound, but it is not very noticeable. The exhaust, because I have a Ypipe also, sounds different. I liked the sound of the exhaust with just the Ypipe, but now, it is louder and less "defined." It is hard to explain the sound of the exhaust, but the sound is definitely due to the fact that the stock muffler and resonator was not meant to have so much air flowing through them. Although it sounds different, it is not that annoying or that loud, but I wish I could attain a Bimmerish sound

When backing out of my driveway, I noticed some lowend loss. If you remember my post about my Budget ypipe, I also said that the Budget took away some lowend. Now, with the Budget ypipe and Stillen intake, I notice more of a lowend loss, but not too bad. The loss is actually not as bad a people make it sound, I don't mide it. I think it is a more comfortable ride when driving(i'm auto) around regularly. With the stock ypipe and stock intake, there is a lot of torque when you lightly tap the gas to accelerate and it feels jerky, but it produces crap HP#s above 4krpms.

I took my car to an empty street and O 5H!T, there are defintely noticeable gains thanks to the intake along with the ypipe. I've driven a G35 loaner before, and DAM, my car reminded me of it. I know my car is probably a mid-high 15 second car and the G35 is a high 14 second car, but still, the pull in first reminded me of the G35. The ECM has not fully learned the intake yet and I can't wait for it to get faster. The sound of the intake is deep, loud and a little on the raspy side, which I hope a bent midpipe from frankencar will fix in the future.

I keept the scoop part of the stock intake in the car, hoping it will scoop air to where the filter is. After driving on the freeway, I notice that the stillen bracket, where the scoop channels air, is cool to the touch. I was thinking of taking off the bracket and making my own that would not block the channeled air's path. Also, use something to block off heat from the engine behind the filter, but of course cut out an opening where the channeled air can enter.

All in all, I am happy with my Stillen intake. The installation of the filter itself was easy, but cutting the wire loom to extend the IATS was the semi-hard part. There was low-end loss, but not as bad as people make it sound. It is absolutely nothing to be worried about because the VQ has more than enough torque to start with. When you go WOT, it is enough to put a big smile on your face because of the pull and sound. The Stillen intake, or any intake, compliments a ypipe very well. I am still curious how the Apexi filter will perform with a bent midpipe, the Stillen with a bent midpipe and the Injen race division intake.

Re: Stillen Intake Review (very very very long)

Glad to hear ya like the Stillen Intake. When i installed it last year and drove it for the 1st time, it scared the crap outta me. I thought something was very wrong, car sounded mean. If you like it now, change it over to a hybrid intake with either the PR or Franken Midpipe. It changes the sound a bit, and i have to say when i drove that i loved the sound so much i went tearing around my neighborhood and had all the neighbors staring at me Intake was the best thing ive done yet.... glad ya like it
