squeaky drive pulley

my car is curently up on stands, and i thoughthat my belts just needed adjusting due the sudden change in temperature, but to my surprise the shrilling, squeaky noise is coming from my drive pulley. What can I do to fix this??? thanks

Are you talking about the crank shaft pully? If your hearing the squealing at that pully, it's your belts, not the pully.

If your refering to your idler pully, then replace it.

Actually i gave up and took it to a mechanic to find out that it is actually the water pump. I have never heard a water pump get so loud. I assumed it was a bearing off a pulley. I pulled all the belts off and started the car and the noise was still there, radiating from the area where the pulley is, so I kinda feel like an idiot, but at least I know now, Nissan waterpumps get irritatingly loud when fouled up. I though it may have been the idler pulley too, so it took it off also. drive pulley=crankshaft pulley, the only pulley that powers the belts......... , so I'm out $80-100 +2.5 hours of labor...........

What was the sound like? My car makes a high pitched singing sound only at idle. Was your sound constant?

Actually the sound was fairly consistent, and increased with highre rpm's, but would disappear occasionally. Your sound might be from belts.

I am getting the same damn sound!

I posted this question and did searches to no end.......
The whistle happens sparratically but only at idle. Just raise the rpm's by 100 and the sound stopps untill it drops back to idle.

Seems to happen with the cycling of the cooling fan. You can hear the whistling starting to happen approx 5-10 seconds before the cooling fan comes on. It will keep making the noise until approx 15-30 sec after the fan turns off......then it just STOPS and wont come back till the next cycle.

Its driving me nuts! It is loud and embarassing.
I have since changed the belts and the idler pulley and still does the same thing..........

95MAX.....we gotta talk!

The only way to truly find out the origin of the noise would be to use a stethoscope...............it will tell you if it from the bearings or possibly the water pump in my case

69CHARGER_RT,

I know how you feel. Noise wise. Heres what I have done. Run the car without the belts on...still have the noise. Changed the tensioner....still have the noise. Put a UDP on the car...still have the noise.

The noise comes and goes. This summer no noise...well would come and go. Now its back.

The noise is only at idle (when the car is warm). Any gas at all and the noise goes away.
