Where is everyone mounting their amp fuses?

Stop!

Before you flame me to death, I don't need to know where on the wire to mount it. I want to know where everyone is mounting the inline fuse in the engine compartment.

I've seen a few installs some with the fuse right on the battery, some with it "floating" but there really doesn't seem to be a cool place in the engine compartment to mount it that's close to the battery.

What is everyone doing here?

Thanks!

what about on the firewall where you'd normally drill if you have a PR CAI.

Its a little far from the battery. I didn't want to go more than 18" and once you snake the wire it ends up being pretty long. I'll take a look at that though. Thanks.

I actually tie wrapped my fuse holder to the box right in front of the battery. I think it is also a fuse holder but I can't remember. I like that because it is nice and close to the battery 6-8 inches, and isn't just hanging there.

Your fuse should be 18" from the battery at most. If you look right in front of your battery you will notice a breaker box, clean the breaker box of and use double stick tape on the bottom of your fuse holder to stick the holder to the box

That's EXACTLY what I have now! Only difference is I used velco tape (so I can remove it). I just wasn't crazy about it because it covered the fuse labels. Perhaps I should change my neon-blue split loom tubing to black so it doesn't stick out as much.

you don't want to do that.. you NEED a fuse on the power wire before you go through the firewall... otherwise, what's going to happen if/when the power wire rubs a hole in the insulation under the hood and there's no fuse to protect it..
That's right.. you get to buy a new car after the wire catches fire and the battery explodes under the hood and your car goes up in smoke.

Even double-sided tape isn't gonna last under there I don't think. I have mine velcroed to the side of the battery casing, with the velcro superglued onto both the box and the fuseholder. Eventually the adhesive holding the velcro together came apart and I put superglue in there, but it didn't move much when it was kind of hanging there anyway.

ive never seen this happen..
but how can the wire rub a whole in the isulation, and how will it blow up the battery?

The insulation of the wire can rub against metal (abundant in the engine compartment)and leave the inner copper exposed. Once that touches metal (ground), you have completed the circuit and it's spark city. I'm not sure if will blow up the battery (although I'm sure it will drain it ) but it can cause a fire in no time (perhaps that is what would blow up the battery?). Open flames or sparks are a bad thing anywhere in a car with the exception of inside the engine. The reason for having the fuse no more than 18" from the battery is less damage can be caused before the fuse blows.

I took out the wrong side of my fuse holder (the one connected to the battery) a few years ago and it slipped out of my hand. The spark was so powerful that it blew off one of the little metal pieces that cup the fuse! That, and I almosted crapped my pants

Needless to say I only needed to learn that lesson once!

But I have a question, how come most amps that I see today no longer have fuses on the amp themselves?

they dont need em, and they are one more thing to quit working, and have to track down the cause.

Did they need them before or did they figure that no one would put one at the battery so at least it was something?
