P400 on scanner (EGR? How much of a priority?)

I know it has been touched on a lot. But could you let me know what kind of priority and attention this should be given? I have 87K on my car and have never cleaned out the EGR system. I am planning on doing so this winter since my Max will be garaged. Will driving it as is cause any long term problems or damage to the car? Thanks in advance.

To provide a little further info, I checked the Haynes manual where it has all of the decoded trouble codes. And it talks a little further about the EGR fault than does my scanner. Haynes says P0400 is "EGR insufficient or excessive flow detected". Do you think this might be the excess carbon buildup in my hoses and all of the tubing in the EGR system?

In responseto this post...Since it has been getting cold here in the midwest, my CEL has not come on. During fall, it came on with an "EGR malfunction" code about every 2 weeks on three or four different occasions. I concluded it is probably carbon buildup in the EGR sysytem (tubing and so forth). Yet, the last of November and all of this month, I have had no problems with the CEL coming on and giving an "EGR malfunction" code. Anyone have ideas why?

I received this code, and cleaned my EGR tube at 111K. It was already blocked completely. You can clean it yourself and the results are great. Look for my comprehensive pictures and directions thread.
