what do you think of used/recycled tires?

I have no idea if this question has been posed...but I of course have not seen it pop up in the last 5 months (so if it has let's revisit it again)

I noticed yesterday on the way to work after hitting the gym that ANOTHER used tire place has popped up

so in the span of 1 mile there are three used tire sellers/resellers

now back when I was and uneducated sentra driver, I would put used tires on the car up until the point when I bought rims for the car and bought tires with warranties

I guess I should have begun my meandering soliloquy by asking what in the sam hill is a used/remanufactered tire??

anyways....anyone using them on thier maxima???

Maxima...no..but my old man has bought one or two used tires for my brother's 1st gen Q. When you only need 1 or 2, it MAY be a good idea. From an environmental point, it's better than having a giant burning tire yard like on The Simpsons

I have purchased used tires several times times over the past years and they have worked great for me. They're fine if you need 1 or 2 tires until you have money for some new ones and the guy I go to let's me pick from his selection. You would be suprised with the amount of tread still on tires when people switch out for new ones.I don't buy re-treads though from what I understand they are made very similar to the tires on 18 wheelers that you see lying all over the highway all the time. Seems too risky.

I would buy used high performance tires for autocrossing. If the tires aren't old and hard, you get the best dry traction when the tread is down to 5/32". Tirerack even offers a tire shaving service for new tires that are going directly to the track.

Obviously, you have to inspect them carefully, both inside and out. It may also be tough to find 2 or 4 tires of the same make, model and with similar wear.

My dear, let me pull your ear to something I learned the hard way...

I bought what I considered were two sets (Pirelli P6000 and Kumho 712) of decent condition performance tires from one of these types of resellers...turns out the first set was hard as rocks and were cupped...the second set had a lot of tread left but were also cupped..

that is why it is hard to justify performance tires in my mind, cause they are high maintenance and once they get a stray wear pattern or start tread separation or something like that, they are junk...if you just want a short term replacement, go for it...

if you plan to keep them for an extended period, bite the bill and get new...good luck, dear.

hmm I bought used- my Sumitomos were 95% tread plus when I bought them, not patched (inspect the tires carefully) and they've lasted me a good 20,000 miles with plenty of tread to go... and not bad at all for about 350 or so for the tires

I would buy used tires if they are almost new, no patches, no cuts, just be sure about what you are buying

like I just picked up a set of Federals 245/40-18 new for 400... if I could have picked up a set of used Potenzas 95% tread I woulda jumped on it!

if I dont like these Federals... I use em for 5 miles and decide i dont wan em no more- they go to the tire yard and I get Potenzas

when a car crashes and is totalled, tires go to tire yard
hmmm when I put my dub plus twos on and I bend a rim, I decide screw it and sell the rims and tires- tires go to tire yard

used tires arent so bad, you can pick up 18" Bridgestone Potenzas for 50 bucks each with more than half the tread

You just want to check them out mainly and make sure they still have decent tread and no major signs of damage. Plus they are nice to use for a while between tires sometimes.

who is Sam Hill?

Does he drive a Maxima or own used tires?

Does he have cupping or does he wear a cup when he drives his Maxima?

too many questions on this thread to have answered...
