Taking 3rd gear all the way up to redline will just slow you down on a 4th Gen because the engine runs out of breathe up top. That's why it took you so long to hit redline in 3rd. So you should be finishing the 1/4 mile in 4th gear.

As you can see from the power curves above, the power on the VQ30DE falls off considerably towards redline. The optimal shift point seems to be about 5900-6000rpm on the 3-4 shift (about 90mph). 00-01 VQ30DE-K guys on the otherhand, should just keep it hammered in 3rd all the way to the rev-limiter, since their variable intake allows them to keep making power all the way up top.

I've found that once you start running about a 14.6, you HAVE to shift into 4th gear or you'll hit the limiter before the finish line.

Yes, you will be in 3rd at the end of the 1/4, unless something is wrong with your car or you are EXTREMLY slow...

I'm in 3rd about 200 feet before hitting the 1/4 mark. At Maxus, although I ran like shyte out in that heat I bouced off the limiter in second when I manually shifted.

im guessing you're 5spd??
in which case that trap speed is pretty low. (if you're auto then very high)
i have a 99 5spd and when i went to the track with intake only, my lowest trap speed was 92.62mph, highest being 95.00mph.

i never shifted or played with my auto at the track...just left it in D....i wanted to get a run in with OD off, but i forgot about it....i would think that if you left OD off while running it, youd stay in 3rd longer instead of shifting to 4th, and i think itd be a litter faster of a time....

I have to shift to 4th at redline with my auto near the end of the 1/4. However I am running 22" slicks and the speedo is over 125 MPH even though it is really only at 105 MPH, but the lower gearing from the wheels makes the speed read high.

Hey Jon, that happend to you too? I stayed in 3rd, and go a higher trap speed of 90mph. In earlier runs I shifted at 6k into 4th, and could not break away from 88-89 mph trap speeds.

why does everyone think that there isa a big difference in auto and in standerd trap speeds/. in the 1/8th i ran a 9.1381@80mph i also ran a 9.1550 in an auto at 79.89mph same year car top was 5speed
in the 1/4 i have run the best of a 13.9 at 100mph and seen a auto run a 14.2@104mph so mph does not have anything to do with you E/T its all in the box your 6oft times are the most important/

In what type of car? In 4th gens there is a significant difference. Typical stock auto traps 86-88 while a typical stock 5spd traps 90-93. No one said MPH has anything to do with ET on this thread, they said MPH has to do with which transmission you have in your 4th gen Max.
