Pic of rear caliper piston.......worth to replace?

I had to replace my rear caliper because I just could not get the damn piston to turn.

I finally brought the old caliper home and after removing the boot, saw why it was not turning. The piston was surrounded with browinish caked on stuff. I don't think I could remove this stuff even if I had the tools to do so.

Do you guys know how much a new piston would cost? Or should I just throw this whole assembly away.

Also...can someone please tell me exactly what CROCUS paper is. Thanks.

mine looked kind of similar to that, but not that bad
looks like it's just lots of crap built up there. I was able to clean mine til it shined with just a rag and a little bit of brake parts cleaner

I dont know if you can get the piston separately or not, lots of auto parts places will sell complete rebuilt calipers

I tried cleaning it with brake cleaner, however, the crud has eaten into the piston. It is badly pitted.

If your not sure, the time to replace it is when its apart.... I know a caliper is not to hard to get to, but it is usually more fun to do a job once.

looks like my caliper when i froze the left rear doing a big sweeping e-brake slide through gravel for my friends camera (read "police") calipers can be had pretty cheap if you call around. most places will charge $80 for the core. have fun, and dont forget to bleed the brakes.
