launching with an auto tranny

I was checking out the Supraforums.com and read how some of the auto Supras launched. They said to not only brake torque, but also use the parking brake to help out in the launch. So pull up on the parking brake and brake torque it to 3000 rpms? They say something about by doing that you could stall it at higher rpms. I normally launch at around 1800 rpms. Would this work for us as well? Wouldn't it be bad on the tranny? I might try this out next time.

I don't think that would really help mike, plus it IS bad for the tranny to do it too long. When you brake tq, you are basically 'flashing' the tq converter, or, you are raising the rpms up to the point the tq converter wants to move the car, but can't because of the brakes. 3k rpm or over and you will be hitting the lockup point of the converter. brake tq'ing the car also builds up heat rapidly, so you don't want to do it for a long time. Really the only better way would be to get a new tq converter with a higher stall rpm. On our launches we have to really worry about traction due to weight transfer, something that works for the Supras being RWD, but not on a FWD. Hope this helps.

Matt, you're right. Forgot Supras are RWD and we are FWD.

the reason the Supras can use there E-brake is because it locks there rear wheels when there power-braking so they dont just spin all hell on the track. this doesnt have any effect on FWD cars because the E-brake locks the rear wheels, so your front ones are still able to let loose...if that makes any since...

If you have a stock converter you won't be able to torque brake it to 3000 rpm. Mine will go to 2300 rpm at full throttle. You would need a loose converter to go higher.

Will doing this every time I race hurt anything in the car? I don't hold it too long, I just do it a few seconds right before I go. I only go up to 1800-2000 rpm's.

well, my auto trans teacher showed us how to stall test a tranny which basically you step on the brakes and floor the gas wot to see what the stall rpm is so im shure it can handle a couple thousand rpms for short periods of time but dont over do it

The supras probably torque brake higher so that they launch right into their boost with no lag on the launch. Does that sound right?

I find that brake TQing at 1,300rpms and holding it for like 2-3seconds will make the tires squeal and the RPM's jump to 2,700rpms quickly shooting the car foward.
