although you might be better off rebuilding it last time I priced out the bearings I think it came to around $200 if you can take it apart yourself it shouldn't be to much to have a shop press them....

rebuilding isnt a terrible option. I just rebuilt mine about 6 months ago. full bearing and seal set cost me $300(in texas). as a side tech note, transmissions in VE cars WILL NOT work. bell housing and starter location is completely different. 89+ VG cars have the same part number as our 2nd gen transmission and will work, but have a lower final drive gear ratio. I learned that the hard way. 2nd gen final drive is 3.428 for auto and 3.429 for 5 speed. 3rd gen 5 speed is 3.650. I have a 91 trans in my 88. had to go up to 3rd gen tire size (205/65/15) to correct speedometer and get mpgs somewhat back in check.

i could get you some documentation, but is really not as helpful as just asking someone that knows anything about manuals. what is yours doing? i can tell you whats wrong with it.
fwiw, any issue you have is gonna require at least pulling and opening the trans...

I have an 88 auto, using moblie 1 syn atf for about 2 years since I had it rebuilt.
In the morning when the car has not been driven, 1st and maybe 2nd gear are really hard to shift up, it takes me about a mile or so for each shift, so I drive really easy on the motor, cause otherwise, it just slips a bit and revs the engine excessively. Feels like I'm dragging something or the parking brake applied, After I get 2nd or 3rd, boom! every thing begins to smooths just fine out for the remainder of the day, but the issue repeats every day.

youre, losing pressure from the internal piston seals being worn out. once the trans is warm the parts expand and it begins to work normally. needs to be rebuilt. i had the same problem with mine. I switch to 5 speed as a result. had a hard time finding parts to repair the auto and prefer a manual anyway. sorry for the late responce.
