Paint Quality/Durability

Yeah - i've got a '90 GXE. Now...my question is, do yalls' bumbers paint chip and wear off real easy? Cuz, before this car was mine, it was my sisters...before that some old lady - since the bumpber paint is chipping so easily, does that mean it could of been in a wreck and replaced w/out a good clear coat? OR is the clear coat gone and i just need a new paint job? (my sis or me haven't had a wreck in it)
thanks,
-bijan

Re: Paint Quality/Durability

before i got a paint job it had a lot of small chips from rocks and debris, im thinking that the clear coat is gone since its a 90, just look around the car, does it shine and reflect, if so then it is possible that the front bumper has been repainted w/o a clear coat, but most likely the car wont, i think age/wear has taken its toll on your car.

if the bumper has ever been replaced, it NEVER sticks as well as the factory paint. I hit a coyote last weekend travelling to see my family, and it knocked ALL the paint off the right side of the bumper. no damage to the bumper itself, it just knocked the paint off.
I can now stick a screwdriver under the edges of the paint and just peel it away from the rest of the bumper. niiiiice.

that is insane, never heard of that before, i got my car painted because a deer ran into me, literally, i didnt even see it but sure as hell heard it, needed a new quarter panel and door, the buck hit the car so hard and violently that it lost control of its bowels and left a stream of crap across the 2 doors.

HOLY CRAP!!!

Not much you can do about rock chips and such other than wax, wax, and more wax until you've got tennis elbow. That will help. The paint is old and is wearing, that's my diagnosis. When I painted my car in July, I sanded the whole body rough and put on two coats of base and then sanded and buffed that smooth before I laid the paint. I was told that would help adhesion. So far, I only had one chip and that was because the second day I actually drove it I was on the highway and some ******* threw a glass bottle out his window and hit my front bumper. Still no peeling, though, and that's a good thing...

I ran over a bike and the paint just wouldent stop flaking off. I dont know if it was in a accident befor and the people who painted it didnt add a flex additive, but I had it painted at this shop that uses DuPont paint and bakes it on to the car. I havent had any problems since.

That's what I did, with my whole car. I have some chips, but no flaking... even around the chip. DuPont IMO is great paint, and I took my time with the prepping as much as possible which is VERY important.
