2k2 Auto vs. Volvo Wagon???????
2k2 Auto vs. Volvo Wagon???????
So I'm rolling down the hwy and there is some Volvo XC wagon all over the road. So a move along past him and we go around an on ramp and onto another hwy and he punches it from around 60 behind me and starts to catch up. I pinned 'er and what the heck?? he's still rolling on up??? It was not a V70 (ie no turbo T5) and it went real well. It wasn't really a great race as there was a little traffic but I can tell you, I wasn't killing him at all. Since he was rolling up on me at a higher rate of speed I had to catch up to his speed first. I looked on the website and they are supposed to have 208 hp? WTF?

Get in a car crash and see who the loser is.
Perhaps the volvo wagon you raced was the V70 R model? It's AWD, 5spd auto and has I beleive 248 HP. I raced one a while back on a roll and it held it's own.

One gets a LOT more car in a Volvo...Nissan can't compare...we are in the "best bang for your buck" category, but the Volvo is a GREAT car...bar none.
Year in and year out, they are one of the safest cars on the road, and never have the quality issues like we've had lately w/paintchips, rattles, BOSE problems...
love my 6 speed tho...

You have to be careful with volvos from a highway roll. A 5-spd auto and instant torque (torque peak at 1800 rpm)from the turbo makes them competitive. My mother's volvo hauls between 50mph to 90 mph until it kicks into 4th gear. Once her car hits 4th, the eco-gearing kills it. I believe had you pressed the issue, the Volvo would have fallen back.
The safest 4WD vehicle on the road probably is the 5,000+ LBs Suburban
. A colleague of mine bought a new Volvo S80 T6 last year because its good crash test. He traded the S80 earlier this year for a Chevy Tahoe because the S80 had too many electrical problems.

Re: 2k2 Auto vs. Volvo Wagon???????
My other car is a 2002 Volvo V70XC (that's the AWD wagon, not the SUV). The car has a 2.4 liter 5 cylinder with a light-pressure turbo. It hauls *** for a car with a dry curb weight of 3700 lbs.
Don't ask it to turn, though. Lots of ground clearance, soft suspension and Pirelli Scorpion all season tires means it rolls and bounces a lot. I have to admit, though - it's a lot quicker than I ever expected it to be. Not bad for the wife's car

i think that the high-pressure turbo puts out 248, and i think the V70r awd puts out less than that (which seems kinda ill since the "r" was the extreme a few yrs. ago). yeah...don't sleep on those turbo wagons...and you can get'em w/ the manual tranny too. If i could afford it, best believe i'd rock a v70 turbo wagon. tint it up, lower it a lil bit and kill'em on the road.......

Yeah but your car is slooooooooow
Re: Re: 2k2 Auto vs. Volvo Wagon???????
Did I write this??? This is exacltly my situation. The wife has a XC70 Cross Country and it's a pleasure every time I drive it. It has all the best features of my previous cars... more ground clearance than the F-150, as much pick-up as the Mitsu GSX turbo, more room and comfort than the honda SUV. It really is an awesome car.
Who gets the jump is a big deal, but also don't forget it's not very difficult to tune the turbo in that volvo to put out more than the stock 200 hp.

I wish I would have waited and found a good condition 850 T5, T5-R, or even just a Turbo model.....but I'm only 16, so I think my parents tricked me into getting a Red 1995 Volvo 850 GLT. It's really safe, it is basically made entirely of tubular steel, it's red and I think it looks awesome. BUT mine only has the 168HP inline 5. One thing I have noticed is with the car hits a dead zone at 80mph it kinda just stops. The sport mode on the transmission does add noticable pep and rapid acceleration at highway speeds( much like my father's 2000 Maxima GLE)
Now the volvo may not be the fastest thing on the road it's definately one the best made cars on the road. The seats are very very very supportive. the suspension is sporty and firm but still soft enough to dampen the potholes.
The Turbo models are very easy to make fast though, you can get them over 300hp with as little as $1000. Their stock 0-60 is about 6.6sec so yeah don't under estimate them!

"Under the hood lurks the most powerful engine in the Volvo range. The five-cylinder 2.5-liter in-line turbocharged engine puts out 300 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 295 ft.-lbs. of torque at 1,950 rpm. Top speed for the S60 is electronically limited to 155 mph and it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph 5.7 seconds with a manual gearbox.
"The new six-speed manual gearbox was developed to handle the high torque delivered by the engine. Gearshift travel is short, making for fast, positive changes."

Well, VQ, you are entitled to your opinion. That's what makes the world go'round. There are even some guys think Chevys are better than a Rolls Royce.
Volvo certainly does make nice cars, alright, especially since Ford bought the company and pumped in more money (we will probably see more shared platforms, new designs, that's a good thing).
But to make the statement that they are "Great bar none," and that Nissan can't compare? Totally subjective, you can believe what you want.
Quality issues? Few would deny that Nissan and most other major Japanese brands tend to be more trouble free than European and American cars during their life times, and they last a looooooong time without major component replacement or overhauls, even when abused.
Rattles? My son's '96 GXE with more than 160K has no rattles. It's a beautiful car that was mine, Ruby Pearl/tan interior. Still purrs like a kitten, we take it up to 120 or so every now and then to blow out the carbon. Aside from a Kenwood CD stereo, it's 100% stock, the only repair was a o2 sensor.
So, if you really think the Volvo is better, that's what you shoulda got!! I'll keep my '02 SE, thanks.

Again, if you think the Volvo is better, get rid of your Max and get a Volvo! Good luck!
Not sure what a fanboy is, anybody else know?
Well, to set the record straight. . . The V70r for 2000 and ONLY 2000 had the 2.3l that put out just over 260hp. All other years it was making around 245.
My boss has the V70r wagon from 2000 and I get to drive it around a bit. All I can say is WOW! I've never been one for Volvo's, but this thing with the engine it has is just amazing for what it is. Total sleeper to most, and I'm not thrilled about tooling around in a wagon, but what a trip! And you can NOT beat the AWD with a stick!
I haven't driven the 2k2 Max with 255 hp (So they say), but compared to my 2k, there is NO comparision.
