Cleaned Throttle Body - Car feels great!!!

Ok, what are you doing sitting there in front of your computer? Go outside, spend 3 dollars, 15 minutes and clean you throttle body!! When you first start the car, you will notice a less hesitent idle. I hate it when I'm driving and I come to a stop in "D" and it shakes the steering wheel, that is gone now. While driving around 35mph in the city in 4th gear, the engine feels smoother and less stressed at 1500rpms. I have a budget y pipe and stillen intake, and after cleaning the TB, I noticed a deeper sound from the exhaust and a slightly louder hissing from the intake while idling.

So, what are you still sitting there for, go out and clean your TB, it is worth you time!!!

I asked this in an earilier thread, but no one responded. How does the throttle body get so dirty in the first place? Is it oil from the PCV system? Backfiring? The injectors are all the way near the ports and the throttle body is about a foot and a half of air travel away from the injectors. Also, the other interesting thing is that the grime is mainly on the side of the throttle plate you can't see when it is closed.

Anyone have an answer for this?

You can spray wherever you feel like, the cleaner has gasoline it it so it will burn off in the engine.

To open the plate, you just turn the butterfly plate, no harm will be done there, don't worry.

Polishing you TB will not do crap, go get a ypipe or intake or Variable Intake instead.

There is nothing you can mess up in the TB, unless you have 4 inch long fingers. Just spray away and wipe and brush away (with a toothbrush)...simple as that.

Well, you don't want to be scraping with metal objects or wire brushes. That could be really damaging to lots of things, namely the cylinder walls when the metal shavings end up in the cylinder.

O when I meant brush, I mean tooth brush, don't use a metal brush. You don't want to see what happens if the metal pieces from the metal brush go into you engine

Ummmm, My car in 4th gear at 35mph is around 1200 rpm. And I DO have 4 inch long fingers, so is that bad? Anyway, Thinking that the the previous owner of my Max was not **** retentive about cars like us, I doubt the TB has ever been cleaned. Cars at 98k now (1996), think its time?

Thanks

is there any preventative maintenance so I don't have to clean my tb the next time? Like should I change my Nissan air filter every 15k?

Anyone have better pictures than the ones on this link? I wanted bigger better pictures and the ones on motorvate don't seem to get any bigger than they are.

Thanks

Just take out you intake, open you butterfly plate, spray, wipe and brush...simple as that. Use common sense also, like catch the cleaner with a towel that will be coming out of the TB and don't get anything stuck in the TB. Don't spend the whole day looking for how to do it online, just get the idea of it...go outside and do it.

your TB is just SCREAMING to be cleaned out....I doubt your fuel filter hasnt been changed since new either....Those 2 can cause be miracle workers when changed/cleaned.

here is my picture from the last time i cleaned my tb....just spray all up in there, get a toothbrush, wrap a rag around it, and just clean it all up....then if you notice the lever for the tb cable, just lift that up (or have a friend step on the gas) and clean the plate edging as well

That's what I am scared of. I am not too much of a DIY mechanic. I can take out the air intake but then I have no clue as to how to open the butterfly plate even though it has been posted here at all you have to do is push it. But do you just push it vertically inwards or slide is sideways or what? I just can't visualize that. That's what scares me .

Thanks for the reply...

Well I cleaned my TB and I haven't noticed a difference. But anyway like they said just do it. If you can't open the butterfly plate don't worry about it.

All you have to do is press it in and then the accelerator thing will move, i can't think of what its called right now, Its like right next to the TB on the outside and it looks like a half a circle with a little edge on it...i know its not a very good description but just try pushing the butterfly plate in and you'll see accelartor thing on the outside move and the thing that moves is what you need to press...sorry if i confused you, but i tried, hope it helps

I had question for you guys that have already done it. Did you guys clean the TB behind the butterfly plate?...cause i checked behind it and its REALLY dirty and i think its too much to just clean with a rag, so i left it alone, has anyone cleaned it behind it?..thanks

anu

Cleaning the throttle helps your idle and response because...ummm

[Pull things out of a$$] With the carbon build up on the inside, its harder for more air to get into the TB....the butterfly is open a little at idle, and if the TB is dirty, it doesnt allow all of the air to get to the TB, causing a shaky idle....cleaning it allows the air to fully get into the TB, causing the nicer, smoother idle [/Pull things out of a$$]

You should clean the inside walls of throttle body, that before the plate, which is shown in the picture, clean the actual butterfly as best as you can, and try to reach as far into the throttle body as possible (where all the gunk is)...if your brave, you can take apart your TB, and clean it thouroughly...

here is a picture of what you can use to open the throttle body....just lift it up with your fingers (easier if you have afriend hold it) while you clean the inside...not hard at all...

So what gear do you have it in when you have someone else step on the gas? I mean, if you want higher RPM's while you're cleaning the TB's, you don't want to have to run alongside too fast while you're scrubbing the gunk out, esp if it has to be WOT to be able to clean on the other side of the butterfly. I think I may build a platform on the side of my car soze I don't have to run alongside I can just stand there while my friend holds it WOT in first or 2nd depending on how long the street is. It was easier on my Z cause the two TB's are facing the front and you just sit on the front bumper and my friend could turn corners and everything while I was doing the cleaning.

yo jaime, my idle has been all over the place. after revving and letting off, instead of bogging and almost stalling, it now stays idling at 1500 rpm for a good 5 seconds. Then it drops to about 900 rpm. I reset the ecu, but no luck. Still high idle. Its really annoying actually when trying to slow down because its almost like giving gas on me when i want it to idle. (wow i make NO sense )

Thanks a lot Jamie. Tha's exactly what I was looking for.

BTW, since my car has that intermittent shaking problem where the RPM goes down to like 375 and then slowly climbs back up to 450 - 500 when I am in D and stopped at a light, I had taken the car in to the dealer numerous times. I do like that dealership. They even replaced the IAC valve under goodwill for that problem. I had called them for my Transmission flush appointment yesterday and popped in this question saying I have heard that when the car idle does that, its either the TB that needs cleaning or one of the coils. They told me that they can schedule me for cleaning the TB and the fuel injectors for a cool $119 + tax. He He He. $119 for a 15 minute job which they say is 1.5 hours (Now if the TB takes 15 minutes, does cleaning fuel injectors take the rest of the 1.25 hours???????)

I might as well bite the bullet and do it myself. Then if incase I do screw up (which is highly unlikely based on this post), then I will fork the $119.

there's something about high idle after cleaning your throttle body..It didn't happen to me, so I didn't read too much about it. I'll do a search about when I get home from work tonite, and I'll let you know....

Did you get that fuel filter yet?
