im sick of the ugly sounding bose sub, so i wanna take it out and put a rockford, alpine, pioneer, or pheonix gold sub in the same place. What size fits in there? 8"? 10"? 12"? and which brand do u recommend? I'm sort of a noob to this sort of stuff

 

it is an 8" sub. if you don't want to do more work, and just want to swap then you will have to find a free-air 8" sub. if you want to build a box for it, underneath the deck, then i can help recommend something.

image dynamics is a really good brand, if you haven't heard of it.

keep in mind with any of these subs you will have to use an external amp. the bose amp will not work.

if you want the sound of a tight enclosed sub, do what suds1 did. he has a small box under the rear deck, a VERY small box. You can easily find 8" subs that only need .3-.5 sq ft of airspace

 

yes. that's what i'd recommend doing. it will sound so much better. but it seemed like you wanted to do a direct drop.

With that amp in a free-air application, maybe 100 watts. Seriously, if I were you, I would buy an 8" Infinity Kappa sub and put it in a small (.33 cubic ft) box attatched under the rear deck. I know it woudl take up a little trunk space, but it will improve the sound notably.

 

yes, going with the image dynamics sub, you should get an amp that will supply the sub with about 100-150 watts. using the sub in that setup will reduce it's power handling abilities.

before you buy anything post here what you think your going to be getting, to make sure the resistance of the sub matches with the amp. i'll go ahead and see what i can find on that sub's power handling in free-air usage.

 

I think free air (infinite baffle) will sound pretty bad in 5th gens 'cos the seats fold and it woul be really hard to acheive decent seal (even though it is free air - front and back of the sub should be on different sides of enclosure however big it is).

I'm with everyone who suggested doing an 8" in a box in the stock location. It will sound so much better and you'll have a lots of subs to pick from.

 

that is true, but it should sound better than the bose. i myself am going to go with a cdt 8" sub, and mount it on the rear deck, but i will also have a small box mounted underneath the rear deck for the sub.

 

hardest part about building a .3 box would be having enough room for the basket/magnet I bet the cardboard box that ID sub ships in has more than .3 ft

 

i'm going with 0.4 with my cdt ms-80, mounting depth on it is only 3 inches i believe.
