Which brand of gas do you put into your tank?

I personally use Chevron, but my friends use Shell. I might be making the change to Shell since there is a Shell gas station next to my apartment.

Shell and Texaco are kind of the same, since Shell just bought Texaco.

Yeah.. all the Texacos around here have been changed to Shell. It's weird cuz right when they made the switch, those Shells had the cheapest gas out of all the Shells. Then, they eventually ran out of gas to where only 87 octance was available. When they finally got more gas, the prices matched all the other Shells. I'm thinkin they still had Texaco gas and that's why it was cheaper and they waited til they ran out. I used to fill up at the military base because their gas was a lot cheaper. The gas is cheaper, but I got worse mileage on it. So I went back to Shell and got around 30 miles more per tank. Someone told me that the gas on base was diluted with kerosene.

Go with Shell most of the time since I have a Shell Credit Card to get free gas BP/Amoco is the 2nd choice and Sunoco is a close 3rd. I have had good luck with Citgo gas too. I find it interesting to see all the different brands based on regions of the US and Canada....

US Gas (might be local to NH?) is right down the street from me. I used to think different vendors' gas were all different until I followed a truck that pulled out of Mobile (he had obviously just made a delivery) and pulled in to US Gas to make another delivery.

Unless they (Mobile) put additives in the gas while it's in the ground, US Gas has the exact same gas as the Mobile station up the street but US Gas is at least 5% cheaper.

I use Speedway.

There aren't any of the 'choices' around here, except Shell, and none of those are in my 'usual' area.

Chevron! Especially since I read yesterday in the paper that they are phasing out the MTBE in California and using ethanol instead.

I think what really happens is that US Gas is buying gas on the spot market. They buy from those that actually produce gas by taking bids to see who can provide the gas at the cheapest price at that particular point in time. That may be any of a number of gas producers. This is often cheaper b/c there is no name attached. The downside, you end up with a buch of different types of gas mixed together, creating who knows what.

I always go to Mobil stations. I've probably had only 5-10 tanks of gas from other stations.

How many different brands of gasoline actually exist? What about Exxon, Sunoco, BP, Citgo, Sheetz (and other convenience store brands)? How many of these are really the same?

A lot are really the same before they get it--the different companies just mix in their own additives and sell it to you.

You might think your answer is helping, but it's not. It contains no useful information. I want someone to make a list of unique gasoline brands that are bought at gas stations. The stations may have different names, but they could be selling the same stuff, so this poll needs some background information to make sure the poll choices are unique.

I don't use a particular gas station......I just drive and wait for a fuel tanker to pull up next to me and I give him the signal to go ahead and hook up to my car, and he fills my gas up that way. Then I wave him off and unhook and continue driving.........When I can find no tanker on the highway, I usually stop by NASA, which is only 30 million hours away from me, where I get 18 gallons of rocket fuel for a cheap $20,000 a gallon...........but if I'm in a hurry to work and have to stop by somewhere closer, I usually settle for the usual 76/Circle K station, and pay an outrageous $1.45 a gallon for premium!!

Sure it does. Do you think everyone on here know that all gasolines are identical except for the additives? This is a place for people to learn. Just because something may be obvious to you, it may not be to someone else. I am not trying to flame, but your comments were unnecessary.

All of your "major" brand names are going to be different, due to the composition of the different additives they use. The base stock that they use is in effect the same.
The only place you might not know what you are getting is the smaller companies, or one-off no name stations. They buy from whatever local refinery is cheaper. It may be Texaco, it may be Mobil, or whoever. Depends on availability, price, location, etc...
The best advice on choosing brand is if you know your car is well-tuned, and in good condition, but the driveability is pathetic on the correct octane, try another brand. Gasoline composition will change with the season, so if you lose driveability, try yet another brand.

The poll won't show much other than "5th Genners prefer brand X." It is going to be influenced by geographical location, price, and convenience, which really won't tell us anything.
But to help your list, Mobil/Exxon are the same, and BP/Amoco are the same. So are Chevron, Texaco and Caltex.

Sunoco 92

I use Sunoco only because I have their Mastercard that saves me 2% on each purchase. My friends tell me Shell is the best and i don't doubt it, but it's usually more expensive.

I try to stick with Amoco Ultimate. It seems to be a lot cleaner than some of the other brands.

that's a lot of wasted typing for pretty much no effect.
