Enging just got cold?

Hello All
I'm a new 94/VG owner and new to this so please excuse me if this is a novice question.
The strangest thing happened the other day while driving. I had the heat on and it was pumping until I got on the highway. The temp of the air got much colder and the temp gauge was just under 1/4. Shouldn't the enging stay hot? It wasn't unusually cold that day. I have never noticed that before although the heat does seem to fluctuate when I have the temp set to 85 sometimes.
Could this be a mechanical failure?
Thanks

your thermostat is stuck open so when the air outside dips the coolant also becomes colder. normally, at this point the thermostat would close stopping all of the coolant (which is cold) from running into the engine. once the engine warms up again the coolant would flow back into the engine. someone correct me if i'm wrong cause i'm not the "mechanic type". the part is less than $10 and you can probably do it yourself. i'm having the same problem but i can't seem to get the thermostat housing off even after i removed the 4 bolts holding it on.

Yeah just like CanadianMaxima said....its the thermostat....i had the same problem until 2 days ago when i changed the stat...and the problem is gone..

just make sure you buy a "failsafe" thermostat, that will get stuck in open position if it goes bad. i bought mine from NAPA for 12 bucks.
