Stock alarm good enough??

My 96 has the stock alarm that will go off when the doors are opened, and somthing else with the windows? (written on the glass.) I also park it in front of my window and can see, and engage alarm from my bed, as well as put the cross hairs of a semi auto - mini fourteen on any one close to my vehicle. I figure this will be enough to deter anyone wanting to steal anything from my car.

But I have also seen some people like 'justmax' who's car has been totally desimated by thieves.

How are these getting bypassed?

Is there a way to prevent this short of letting a pitbull live in the car? (that would get smelly)

My question, is it worth getting an aftermarket alarm, or are theives who can get around the factory one, going to be able to get around an aftermarket one?

Also, beware of where you take your car. A friend of mine had his stereo and speakers stollen. Come to find out it was employees of a tire place he had taken his car too, they had looked over his car and figured out how to get everything out, and with his name and address on the bill they waited a couple of days then robbed him. They had done this to a couple of other customers too, the connection was made by investigators and they were arrested (if you do get robbed, you might mention if you have taken your car to any place that could look over it like this.)

The aftermarket alarms are much better for the fact that ther are more protectected zones. More than likely, the more expensive the alarm, the more features and zones involved (and more labor). Also, with aftermarket alarms, the alarm brain deters the thief longer if they don't know what they are doing. As far as the stock alarm, in my opinion, a thief can just buy a repair manual on a certin type of car and read the wiring scheme with a factory alarm installed on the car. With this information, he knows what to look for to bypass the alarm.

The factory alarm is useless. Every two bit car thief from New York to LA knows how to get past it. I learned that the hard way after my Max stolen. An aftermarket alarm would help as long as it is installed properly.

Thanks for the reply's. I'm pretty sure my theft deterant system mentioned in the first paragraph will be enough to keep would be theives away.

Does anyone know how they get past these alarms? Is their a feed to the battery that they cut? I was thinking that someone might leave the factory feed as a dummy, and then rewire the alarm with a hidden power wire.

For anyone who has had their car broken into, what did the thief cut, or do to cut off your alarm?

...alarms are meant to deter amateurs & lil kids...if a pro wants to take your car they will take it be it a Benz, Bimmer, Jag or Rolls...get the lo-jack if that will make you feel better.

A lil story: My former roomie had his beat up Ford Tempo stolen 3 times from our parking lot in the back...each time we would find the car in our neighborhood...in a bid to foil their attempts we took the battery out and he clubbed the car...they came with their own battery ... he swore that he was not f'ing s/ones wife or gf either and we are dumbfounded up till now why this happened to only him and three times back-to-back...interestingly he sold the car and it never happened again..we later found out that the guy who bought it coincidentally lived a block away from us

Forget electronic deterrents if keeping the car is your goal. Just get an "Autoloc" from your local auto parts store and sleep well. . .

I have had one for almost a year and it does offer some peace of mind. (But I have no fancy audio in my car - just the Bose - so I don't worry about break-ins)

If you have a virtual audio/video store inside your car, then buy the best alarm you can afford & be creative with the install. (Worst case: it will slow the bastards down a little, or at least bring attention to them).

Of course, all this begs the question: When's the last time you turned your head, much less ran in the direction of the sound of a car alarm?

in my opinion alarms that make noise are a waste, they all sound the same and nobody cares about car alarms going off @ 3 in the morning. I say buy a 4 dollar switch from your local parts store, wire it to a part of the ignition or fuel delivery, and hide it well. yeah they may get in the car but they ain't goin anywhere, as for the windows and expensive stereo equipment, I'll just let my insurance take care of that.

factory alarm doesn't go off when rear doors are opened, doesn't have shock or motion or glass breakage sensors.

I now have a Crimestopper alarm with all that, and an FM pager to alert me remotely when the alarm is activated, and it tells me which zone it was that got triggered (trunk, shock, motion, glass, door (all 4), or trunk)

Never EVER give someone your address if they're going to be working in/on your car. I have always given false addresses to these people. And if you think about it, why the f*ck does anyone need your address to work on your car? Of course you must be unlisted for this to really be effective.

When's the last time you had your car broken into? Mine was about a year ago, and I still check it out every single time I hear any car alarm.

Where's the battery?

Take the battery out of the engine bay and put in in the trunk behind a false wall. Run lots of dummy wires.

I've actually challenged people to break into my car...

If I hear my own car alarm going off in my driveway, or somewhere nearby when I'm out, of course I'll check.

I was referring more to the general attention (or lack thereof) that joeqcitizen pays to the average car alarm going off in their own vicinity. I think most people would agree - that level of attention is very low.

the main point here is that regardless of whatever type of alarm u have if they want you car they will take your car! I had a friend lose his Lexus with 2 hours of parking it in front of his window...they merely put that bish on a flatbed and hauled ***...no alarm went off. The purpose of the alarm is really to slow the ***** focker down. The factory one can be upgraded and you can add sensors to it if you choose. But I've had the cream de la cream of alarms, and it would do the same thing the keyless entry/security system does...(once upgraded). Also I clean out my car everytime I get out....no loose change (crackheads) no loose CDs (lil' punks) and removal of Head unit! (whomever)

and use a club...slows them down some more...but won't stop them...nothing will!

The Club is old school & the steering wheel can be hack-sawed in a matter of seconds to remove it. If you already have one, great, but for people shopping for the 1st time for a "physical" theft deterrent device, go with an "Autoloc" pedal locking device - far tougher nut to crack.

How do you add sensors, etc., to the factory alarm? That sounds like a cool idea - I didn't know it was possible. Have u done this? Part #'s, details?

Justmax you bring back memories...

my car has been stolen 3 times in just as many months. with damage similar to yours each time. nissan makes a ****ty alarm, plain and simple. the best alarm is .... moving. I moved my car from off the main street to my next door nieghbors driveway (recessed behind her house, unlike mine) and i haven't had a problem in a full year.

But nupe500 is right though. If they want it, they'll take it.

I agree with you on the club being old school...I just mentioned that it slows them down...but unto the important question...I direct you to Exhibit A. the How to section of www.vqpower.com

The defense rests! (Too much damn Law and Order)
