Weird poping sound

K, my 98 max just started making a weird poping sound in the back while driving. No clue whats causing it, everything seems ok visually. Seems totally random. Sounds like a paint can being opened. Just started two days ago.

any ideas?

I know you said it occurs at random but is their anything else you could tell us?

Is the car moving
Is it during shifts
Does it happen when you turn, brake, go over bumps, accelerate?
Is there weather conditions that cause it to do or not do this?

Have you gotten under the car and looked?

I know it sounds dumb, (just asking) have you checked for loose things in your trunk?

grody, blah. I cant spell. lol.

Took everything out of my trunk just to make sure that wasnt it. Happens when moving. Doesnt seem to matter if I am accelerating, braking or shifting, but doesnt do it often so I wasnt really listening for it till today. Looked at everything underneath, looked ok. Sound is from the rear, probably left side.

May take it out tonight just to see if there is a pattern. Noticed it 2 days ago, didnt even drive yesterday. I have only had the car for a few months.

Popping sound from the rear. Ok, semi-metallic type noise, slightly muffled.

Check the silly stuff first:

1) Is your factory jack firmly in place? (Sometimes they loosen up over time)
2) Same for your donut spare: check to see if the mounting bolt is holding the tire securely to the bottom of the well.
3) Check for anything else inside the trunk that could be loose & clanking around.

If after doing all this & test-driving, you're sure it's not something inside the trunk, it's time to pull the rear wheels off & have a visual/feel inspection of the brakes & suspension components.

My bet is on a loose item on the trunk. Most likely: the jack.

I get a metallic popping/clicking noise from the rear on either side when I go over bumps (Eibach springs with Konis)... could this be the strut mount as evilroadsvictim mentioned? What exactly should I be looking for as far as the strut mount is concerned?
