Does the wheel go on the tire? Or the tire go on the wheel? Hmmm, such a deep question.

Never seen a 17.7" wheel???????

I had 235-45-17s on a 17x7. It's out of manufacturer's recommended specs but will fit with a little work (my friend at discount tire complained about mounting them). It looks a little funny too, tire sticking out past the wheel lip a little too much. But yes it will work.

or a narrower tire, but then it's only a little wider than stock.

A wheel width of 7.5" or 8" would be best.
It'll definately fit, it may look funny, like too much tire. It can be done...

P.S. if you just need rubber, there's a sale on kumho 235/45/17 for like 75 or 80 bucks. I think I saw it on Discount tire's page, or it may be tirerack..
