Suspension Guru's I need some help

I am driving and everytime I make a extreme left turn ( as if I was doing a u-turn) I hear a knocking sound comming from the front right suspension. Exactly like a knocking, it's almost as if it happens when that side is fully compressed. any ideas?

Are you sure it's a knock and not more like a dong. Or does it happen like a whole bunch of times like 3-5 times during the turn? If so you probably need to get a new strut bearing or repack the grease yourself. But it's kind of hard and irritating.

when driving in a straight line slowly you do not hear the noise?

Is it a clunking noise?

The strut bearings can cause noise, especially when the wheel is all the way over.... You can also check to see where your isolator is sitting at the bottom of the spring. If the isolator is over the end of the spring on the perch, noises occur.

Kevin you got all new strut components when we did your H&R/AGX install this past summer. I don't think it's got anything to do with the strut assembly.

You did have a creak from what we thought was the lower control arm. Perhaps that problem has now amplified.

doesn't happen any other time except when I've got the wheel turned all the way and the suspension is compressed on the right side. don't hear it during regular driving. Strut bearing is brand new less then 6 months of use. it happen about 5 or so times, not really a clunking, sound more like someone knocking on a wooden door.

I would hate to have to take all of it apart but it sounds like that might be where this is going.

Hey Tom,

The creak from the lower arm dissapeared about a couple of months after we did the suspension. This sound jsut recently started heppening. I agree with you that it's prboably not hte assembly. I'm thinking more like CV joint as Canuck said. what do you think?

broke CV joint makes noises like that when you turn a vehicle. You can check the strut bearing that will make noise when you turn but also when you hit a small bump and last the control arm.

At the bottom of the strut there is a 12mm bolt comming out pointing to the outside of the car. This bolt needs a plastic cap on the end of it. Sometimes when the car is turned hard that bolt hits metal and makes a large creeeek noise. I had this problem..put the plastic cap on that bolt..went away.

Will take a pic

Sounds like a bad CV joint to me.

Slightly worn CV Joint <-----------------------> Very worn CV Joint

Humming<------------------>Clicking<------------------>Knocking

Worn CV joint can cause a steering wheel shake at highway speeds, as well.

Kev, wasn't the right CV the one that fell apart when we did the install? You did get a new band put on right? That drive shaft was replaced just before we did the job if I remember correctly. Take a quick look and make sure the boot hasn't fallen off or split open. You'll see the grease all over the inside of the wheel if thats the case.

Does the knock happen when the car is moving, under accelleration or just coasting? CV's make a click click click under load when they go bad. Load meaning accelleration. Just turning while coasting usually will not cause the CV to make noise, so if your noise is happening without load on the CV it's probably related to that creak you had.

Stop by some time over the weekend and we'll do some quick trouble shooting. Do you still have my #? You could meet me at the body shop and we'll put the car up on the lift and look at it.

Just let me know....

Tom,

Yeah I had the shop fix the band the week after we did the suspension. The knock only happens when I'm making a hard left turn ( almost like a fast u-turn). Doesn't happen at any other moment.
not during coasting or accell. Its not exactly a click either, definately like knocks. PM me your number and we'll get in touch.

Kevin

i think i have a similar noise, actually im thinking i could be from my y pipe by the collectors for some reason.
but in any case, my noise sounds like somethings loose and knocking around , or a few marbles rolling in a container.

A knocking sound while turning is most likely due to a CV Joint, but usually those sound like "clack-clack-clack." A worn strut mount will also make knocking noises. I had the pleasure of having both these components fail on me simultaneously on my old VW, and it was a real headache figuring out where the noise came from.

Check this small cap and make sure it is there. If not, when you turn hard it rubbing metal on metal. I had a loud noice before, this little cap took care of it.

holy cow! I forgot about this problem! for those tha are curious, mine ultimately ended up being an axle on the front right. sadly the car just sits now for most of the time, I dont have the heart to get rid of it.

hey i actually have the same problem. i think i may have received a defective passenger side axle (purchased a remanufactured one).
is it a problem if i drive on it for a while, since i don't have time to replace it now?

I got the same problem with the left turns, I replaced both axles, all new strut/spring crap. Noise is still there, I even did that barber style vinyl wrap for the springs like in the suspension stickies, still makes the same noise not as bad, could this be from lowering the car? Ive had my car dropped on eibach pro kits with illuminas for about two years and the noisse just started recently.

so apparently, it may not be the axle, according to what some people here are saying. im lowered on tein s techs and tokico illuminas, but i didn't notice this clicking until a little bit after changing the axle.
i've checked the boots and they aren't torn, so what could be causing the clicking?

i remember an old post about this. you have to see if the springs are hitting something when you do this. have someone look at them when your doing the turn. they will be able to see it, but its a tight fit to seeit.
