I was leaving school today and I put my car in neutral and let the clutch out. The tranny was REALLY cold, as it had been really cold today. The car started rolling foreward!! In neutral!! I cant imagine this is mechalically possible, but it happened. I moved the shifter around and let the clutch out again, it did the same thing. I park in the same spot every day, and I have never noticed that my car wants to roll foreward. I have no idea what is going on. Any ideas?

If your car is in neutral the wheels can still spin..my brother's '92 Eclipse GST, is jacked up so both wheels are off the ground..well since we store that car for winter we start it every week...we noticed that when he started the car and put it in neutral with the clutch out, the wheels would spin,barely, but they still would...I HIGHLY doubt that there is enough movement from the wheels to make the car move..Im just letting you know that we experienced this. Your car must have been on slight incline of some sort..but im not sure

You dont use your E-brake when parking your stick car - you do realize someone can then push your car away just to be a hooliganish *******.

 

Hill = makes car roll

Nuetral = nothing stopping the car. ( thus the "rolling" action )

brake = stops car

You need to do a manual to auto swap. Nothing moves when I am in "Park".

 

Boy you guys are a big help ,actually what he is saying does happen ,it does that to my car when its really cold (5F)ive faced up a hill put it neutral let clutch the out and it jerks foward a few feet very gently .

 

I did have the e-brake on when i was parked (i am not that stupid) I let it down, and let out the clutch, and it rolled foreward at a pretty fast rate. Like I said, I park in the same spot everyday and i have never had my car roll foreward, only backwards. I have no clue what is happening, it seems mechanically impossible though. I know how a tranny works, and I cant understand how this could happen, but I was not on a foreward slope. I do have some mechanical understanding after rebuilding a 76 TR6, I really learned a lot about the mechanics of a car, that is why this stumps me. Tahnks so much!!

 

I had the same thing happen when I left work this morning. I was like - "WTF?" But it was so cold out that you could feel the tranny fluid like it was thick grease. I just had the tranny fluid changed at the dealership two days ago. Here is the scenario: Level ground. Release clutch in neutral. Car moves forward gently. Depress clutch. Car rocks back gently.

I am hoping that this could not mean that my clutch is starting to slip and somehow neutral is not now 1st gear?!!? But as you said above, that's mechanically impossible.

 

warm your cars before you set off. and don't come back telling me the owners manual tells you not to because of emmisions and whatever not.

 

 

this reminds me of putting it into first and letting the clutch out real slow(not using any gas)...as long as you are on flat ground the car will go...me and my friend used to get out and watch the car drive itself for awhile and then hop back in...it goes like 5mph

It has always seemed to me that warming the tranny is not at all like warming the engine. I always have to drive mine to get it properly warmed up, sometimes it is so stiff i double clutch for a while. I have let my car warm up on its own and it has had no effect on the tranny. Is this true or am I nuts?
i am VERY glad to hear i am not the only one with this problem, i was beginning to think i was crazy. but does anyone here know why it happens? i dont understand how the movement could be transferred through the tranny when it is in neutral.

As for an auto swap-
no! never! i will drive a stick until I die!! or until technology renders them obsolete.

Weird, this started happening to me as well. In my driveway where there is a small hill going backwards......I'll start my car take my foot off of break, out of gear, no ebrake and foot on clutch. As I would let go of the clutch the car would lurch forward......I have never seen a car do that before and it kinda disturbed me when it happened. BTW: this only happens when it is very cold outside....very strange. and by the way, the car lurching forward is defying gravity, not succumbing to it.

 

I have a brand new act clutch,i dont think it has anything to do with a bad clutch.Im convinced it is the cold temps.

 

This little problem is killing me. I HAVE to find out what it is. As soon as i do, i will tell you guys why it happens. it just doesnt make any sense to me, i would find it hard to believe if i hadnt been the car when it happened.
