newbabe; knock sensor and Rear Heater O2 sensor

recently i bought a 95 maxi gxe i think. it got 137k miles on it. the check engine light on and the guy, used car-lot saleman told me it's a reminder sensor for oil change. he told me he bring to a oil change place where he deal with recently change the oil and forget to reset the reminder, is he bull **** with me?

well, i found this website and thanks for the info i found here regrading how to read the code.
what i found out from the code, i had "bad" knock sensor and rear heater o2 sensor. here's the reading, 7Long 7Short 3Long 4Short.

my question's how hard to replace the knock sensor and the rear heater o2 sensor(if i do it myself)? if i bring it to shop, how much am i looking to pay? (how many hour?) if i dont replace the knock sensor, what will happen? the maxi drive real good and full of power.

thanks

Knock sensor is about $120US and o2 sensor is about $100US, I think.

You can replace both yourself, if you are mechanically inclined.
OR
It should be about a 30min to 1 hour job at a shop. so about $50-60 installation?

The bad O2 sensor usually triggers the knock sensor. So replace the O2 sensor first. Reset your ECU. Drive a bit and see if the knock sensor code comes back. If it does, then change it.

ON 95's the knock sensor is fairly easy to replace assuming you have dexterity. The rear O2 sensor is easier. I would recommend you get a Haynes or factory $ervice manual to help w/ all current and future repairs. Btw, the knock sensor doesn't trip the engine light. The knock sensor is usually only discovered when another sensor that does trip the engine light malfunctions. All I mean by that is that you'll probably have to replace both so figure on spending around $250 for parts. IF you decide to do it yourself, Courtesy Nissan in Texas has good prices.
As to your original question, the engine light does not have anything to do w/ oil change intervals and doesn't need to be reset after an oil change. Good luck and welcome to the Max community.

Take it back to the scumbag & tell him what it means, ***** & see if they will cover the cost. Try to do it when other customers are around, that will act bring out the 'good' in him. If all else fails, do as they guys say in the post above & replace both. The O2 sensor has no effect on performance, but the knock sensor does as a failed one signals the computer to retard the ignition = less performance. If you think the Max feels powerful now, you'll be amazed at the acceleration when you change it!

Let me see...for the knock sensor:

60 minutes - round trip from Nissan dealer $130
+
30 minutes - figuring out current socket does not fit, need 14mm flex socket
+
60 minutes - round trip from Sears to purchase flex socket $8
+
20 minutes - getting the socket in place, and breaking loose the knock sensor bolt
+
60 minutes - reading online how to disengage the knock sensor harness clip (you need to bend a paper clip looking clip outwards, which was never described on the bbs and yes i did a search)
+
30 minutes trying to get the thing back in there and finding out my hands are too large to fit
+
30 minutes for calling friend, having her come over and use her thin hands to screw the bolt into place

Total time for knock sensor replacement: around 4-1/2 hours

Now I know some people will say, what a dolt this Eric L. for taking 4-1/2 hours. But I just tell it like it is. Fixing your own car takes a LONG time.

haha, I feel your pain Eric and nice time calculations. I ended up requiring my girlfriends assistance on a buddies 97 knock sensor replacement. Fortunately for me, 95's have considerably more room to work with so I didn't need my gf to get grease under her nails.

Print this out and save time. The knock sensor is in a very tight spot. If you have some little hands its on you have it made. The O2 sensors you can buy a socket that removes O2 sensors. Go back to the that di ck head and tell him that hes full of sh it and that you need three parts that are going to cost well over $300 plus dollars to give you some of your money back

Here's a rear oxygen sensor from ebay:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...400133896&rd=1
This should be for a 95-99 max, im pretty sure. Just go courtesy nissans website and compare model numbers and pics. This is a good deal if you can get it below $50.

Don't change the knock sensor just yet.

A bad o2 sensor will trigger the knock sensor code. The knock sensor code is often called a ghost code because of this.

Change the o2 first, reset the ECU and see if the knock sensor code comes back. 90% of the time it doesn't. If it does, replace that as well.

I can't believe soemone bought a car with a Check Engine light on!

it SAYS "Service Engine Soon", not "Change oil soon"

NO car has the CEL come on when it needs an oil change - all cars that have the oil change option (Like a Caddillac DTS, for instance), has a seperate light/display for that.

I don't think any car company would match it with the CEL. That's ridiculous - you know how many complaints they'd receive from mechanics and customer?

I would be SOOOOO ****ed off if a used car salesman told me that!!!

Your car is a 95 so by now the o2 sensors are probably just shot. They don't last forever.

You don't need any sort of computer reader for your car. Pick up a Haynes shop manual for it. All the codes are listed in there as well as the method used to get them yourself using the screw on the side of the ECU. This is also explained in the thread on top of this forum regarding your check engine light. Read that thread, there's good info up there!
