The 350 got spanked!! As I thought a stock 350 with 18's vs a 6spd max with a few bolts and light 17's is about even. The guy who owns the 350 looks cool and all but must feel somewhat bad by getting rocked!

I think we must take into consideration that smokinodum and his brother with the se-r are really good drivers. The se-r driver hit a 15.0 stock.. that's really good driving.

I think its safe to say that driver skills can affect the difference in a race from a stop. I don't think just anyone can just hit 13.8 driving emax's car.

One thing those GTP's have more of: TORQUE. Those 3.8L engines (w/ SC) have 280 ft/lbs STOCK. Plus it's mostly low end torque too. I know you can get a bunch of stuff for the GTP's from SLP engineering (they make the parts for the Camaro SS and Firebird Firehawk).

I still would rather have my Max. Ever look inside a Pontiac? Hyundai's plastic looks nicer!!

Ask for a rematch in about 3 years - the Pontiac will be falling apart.

I was just thinking: What if Nissan bored the VQ to 3.8L and then added a supercharger. That 3800 has nothing on a VQ35DE with the same treatment. That said, those old 3800 motors do have some hustle.

MadMax: About Pontiacs falling apart after 3 years; I'll just say, never doubt the effectiveness of duct tape.

AND...

don't forget, within about 3 years the Ponty may be falling apart but actually look OK. The Max will be fine, but will have paint problems that will make it look MUUUUUCH older and frumpier.

You don't have to tell ME about duct tape - my previous two cars were Fords! The Fords weren't too bad really - at least the interiors looked a lot nicer than the Ponti-craps.

JJS - I have no worries because in 3 years I'll be turning in my Maxima (end of lease). I know the 6th generation Maxima will still be around so I doubt I'll end up with another one. My Max is only a month or so old and I have only 1500 miles on it - so far I love it.

OK! I just viewed the video. IMO: At a minimum, the Z should pull on the Max; not barely hang with it. How fast is this guy's GTP that he could pull so easily on a 6sp Max that runs low 14s?

The car mods are listed on the first post and in the video.....the gtp runs 13.9 @ 97 (consistent 2.0 60fts), which is why it beats us from stoplights, but from a roll it was a different story (as seen in the video).

i thought the new 350z's runs 14.0 so.

I think Car & Driver got that time. These are the same folks that ran a 14.7 with a 6sp Maxima; the same time I ran with my stock auto max. IMO, it just seems like the Z has every advantage over the Maxima: RWD, 32hp more, lighter, more aerodynamic; it just HAS TO BE the driver in this case.

Yeah, from a roll, it did seem like the GTP was fading.

is that the same gtp you beat in all the other vids ? , because the gtp in this video has the same mods as that one but looked alot faster even with the extra passenger

Quick Pontiac. Off-the-line, that thing really moved. I'm surprised the 350Z launched like a brick. Was a respectable driver in that 350Z? If so...

That guy who was driving the Z is questionable. From a roll all the cars in the vid would have been toast if the driver had any skills A well driven Z traps slightly over 100 mph.

wow... that engine DOES sound horrible... I'm glad I don't have a GTP :O I would throw the thing away. Thank God our cars sound good. and as far as the reliability thing goes, I agree with all of you 100%... GM's cars DO NOT last, cosmetically or mechanically... have you ever seen a 95 or so cavelier today??? the bumpers look like they're falling off... lol

I bet we'll stop laughing at the Pontiac when they use the 270-280 HP version of that motor for 2004. Than again, the 6th gen Max "should" have more power as well.

Nice run, it just shows that 6-speed Max can run with Z no problems.

Peps on Z forum even talking about it: http://www.my350z.com/forum/showthre...eo+350z+maxima

"The engine sounds horrible"

You haven't heard blower whine? Have you ever listend to a Lightning with an intake, or any car with a Roots type supercharger?? Thats what they sound like, most people love it, maybe it loses something in the video I dunno.

As for the engine sounding like its not running right... Not every car revs to the sky like alot of imports do, that must be what you're used to hearing. Its an auto and it shifts at around 5900-6000 rpm depending on what PCM it has. I like the sound of the VQ too, they're just 2 totally different sounds.

Also, for some of you... When a Maxima gets beat by a GTP, does that make it open season on domestics? As if the cars really gonna fall apart in a few years? My car is 5 years old, looks great (http://www.surferz.net/~tim/pics.htm), no rust, nothing falling apart as it should be I guess, maybe I got a freak? Hell I even drive it in the winter and it looks fine.

And for you dash molestors complaining about the interior... You can have your sweet chrome trim, and quality plastics, as long as they are several cars back.

It's open season for anything that wants some!! I'm an equal opportunity offender...Heheh..

Your GTP does look sweet - I won't pretend it's not. The Maxima is my first non-American car. My family has always had American cars. I'm just tired of them becoming rattle traps! My buddy will admit any day that his '92 Tercel with 140k miles is a more solid car than his '96 Z28 with 60k miles. (I'd still rather have the Z28 myself).

I looked at the GTP coupes before they were extinct and what it comes down to is this (for me): The car doesn't LOOK or FEEL like a $30k car should, PERIOD. If your car was like $23-25 new then I might be more inclined to get one. By the time you put all the bells and whistles on the car (leather, moonroof, high-end sound system) you're right at $30k! Plus - the resale is pretty lousy too.

I got in my friend's parents 1992 Lexus LS400 a few months ago. It had well over 100k miles on it but the doors closed solid like the day it was new and there were NO rattles or squeeks when driving it. Find me an American car that will do that and I'll buy it.

BTW, your engine doesn't sound horrible - it sounds tough to me. I miss my V8 in my T-bird w/ it's cat-back exhaust but just not enough to keep it!
