I have a '93 SE 5spd and when I start it up in the morning there's a brief chirp sound. Then it does it when I start off in 1st and shifting to second. You hear it briefly and it goes away as the rpm's climb from 1500 to about 1700. It's hard to describe, but it goes away as the car warms up. I might add that the chirp is there when I rev it while it's cold. Could it be a belt or tranny problem possibly? Please help.

we got the same problem

i think. while it's chirping (mine squeals) turn off ur heater (supposing it on) if it quiets out then it might be something about the ac piece (i think) my dad just cut the belt and it went away except when start up

we would try to pull the belt off but it was to dark and the belt was to tight so he juss cut it; he was also

Its most likely an exhaust leak....one of your exhaust manifold studs probably broke off....now causing a slight exhaust leak....try to find out if thats what it is by looking for any broken studs.......later

chirp noise

Chirping noises when you car is warming up is usually associated with a bad fan belt. You may want to get the fan belt replaced.

Well the exhaust leak is probably it. The belts on it are pretty new so I don't think it's them. If it is exhast studs, how much is it? My dad has already told me if it's too expensive he's selling my car and I'm getting a 4th gen. Sounds like a good deal, but I LOVE my car and believe me you DON'T understand. I don't want to get rid of my baby!

I heard it was expensive to repair, and it depends what stud it is, some are harder to get to and repair...the ones on the front are easier to work on....find out which one is broken.....on mine its on the front far left....the AC unit is in the way....im gonna guess $250 to repair it...for this reason I left mine alone...the chirp is gone now...but I hear a whistling noise sometimes when driving.....im gonna put a product called "muffler weld" where the manifold and the block meet where the leak is and see if that helps any....just a quick fix until i fix it correctly later on.....I dont think it hurts anything to leave it alone....just the bugging noise is all..........you have the VG or VE motor??

cool....since we both have a VE....we can keep in touch on things we do to our cars....mines a 92 SE 5 speed...I have been working on it alot lately...and have learned a whole lot of cool stuff.....so when you run across something, feel free to ask me anything whereas theres a good chance ill know an answer to most of your questions....about the exhaust leak...verify thats what is the prob....figure out what stud is missing and let me know....in the next few days ill be tryin out that $2.00 can of muffler weld and see if that gets rid of noise........

That's a sweet *** 4th gen you have. If the problem with my car is too expensive I will be in the market for the same car except a five speed. I will let you know about my car, I will be taking it in Tues. of this week. Thanks for the advice.

I had it from when it had 3 miles until the day it was stolen with 187,000....I had almost $10,000 worth of extras on that car!!! but I replaced it with a 97 SE auto....not even as nice

I just got word from the dealer on what was wrong with my car. All the belts in the engine were cracked and wearing. I am getting those replaced. We'll see if that fixes it.

I have the same problem as yours and mine is a 91 SE.
However, I just got all of my belts replaced about 3000 miles ago.

But i don't get a chirp.....its more like a squeal.......its like the squeal you get from tires when you turn a hard corner.

Let me know what comes about with your repair.
