I may no longer be a Maxima owner

Last night I did th stupidest thing I have ever done. I got pulled over going 100mph in a 65mph area. It was after the curfew time also. The cop threatend to arest me for reckless driveing and being out after curfew. He called my dad, and because I am only 16 he let me go home. My dad has taken my car away and is talking about selling it and then buying me a slower car. He is also making me ride by bike to work every day. I won't be able to drive for at least a few months. On top of all that I have a $1200 bill on my car, whatever the ticket is going to cost me, and my insurance bill will be comeing out soon to, which will be close to $900 plus the raise I will get on it for all this. It is my fault, but right now life just stinks.
unless he gets you a Mo-Ped just about any car on the street will go 100. lol.
Tell him the Maxima may be a fast car and one hell of a sleeper but it's also a very safe car compared to some of the little **** boxes running around.

Poor baby... What you kids don't understand is that, as minors, your parents are legally responsible for your actions. You go out driving at 100 mph and, kill someone, you feel real bad; your dad gets sued for every nickel he has.
My kid is 16, and the way he acts I won't even let him get a learners permit.

Yugo? Yugo... Yugo!
I have a friend selling a 1988 Yugo GV... top speed is a little over 80.
As long as you don't mind the psychedelic (house paint) paint job and the tiger stripe seat covers...
Can you say 'tuna can'?

Well I'm 19 and let me tell you, after a ticket like that you will learn to slow the **** down! I have had 2 tickets: 47 in a 30 and 60 in a 40. The 60 in a 40 was on the way to Defensive Driving for the 1st ticket. I've also wrecked about every car in my household including my Maxima. Now I speed on very rare occasions. I have a '93 SE 5spd and let me tell you it's even more tempting for me to speed with that VE under the hood. My dad talked about doing the same thing to me (selling my car for a slower one). When, or should I say IF, you get your car back, keep to the speed limit or not more than 5 over. My insurance is right up there with yours, believe me.

fix them!!!
if you can, if money allows, fix those tickets...i got 2 tickets:
1)going just 42 in a 30, i had it fixed: $75 for the lawyer fee and $80 for the court cost+reduced ticket
2)racing my friend in his pos 89 accord...he got clocked doing 74 in a 40, and i was doing 71 in a 40, the cop got me cuz it was easier (i turned to a 30 mph street and he continued going about 60 straight)....i should have been arrested but since she new that she could get in trouble for writing me the ticket and not my friend, she didnt arrest me...THANK GOD - it cost me $75 for the lawyer and $190 for the court cost+reduced ticket
when this happens, life really sucks, cuz you are out of big bucks...yet on the brite side - your insurance doesnt raise and YOUR PARENTS WONT FIND OUT!!!(if you do it right)
i also own my truck so my parents cant really take it away from me, they didnt buy it for me

I am rebellious when it comes to speed limits on freeeways
I really honestly could care less about the speed limit on freeways. I drive as fast as I want to, as safe as I can at whatever speed I choose (i.e. I don't go 70 in fog, rain, and snow), and I could care less about getting pulled over or getting a ticket. I believe in and follow speed limits in residential areas and city strets, however I have no regard for speed limits on freeways. I once wrote a paper in college advocating the ban of speed limits on freeways. It should be up to the driver to determine what speed is safe for him. When I was 17, I had a maxima and I loved that car. I once got on the freeway at midnight, nobody was on the road and I floored it... I was going 90 when I passed a cop hiding in the bushes and he pulled me over and chewed on my behind. I got a monster ticket for that but got it reduced to $150. Since then I have really fallen in love with maximas because they don't stand out and cops don't pay any attetion to them. I speed every day and I haven't gotten a ticket that stuck for 4 years now. Its easy to get a ticket overturned if you research it and contest it. Don't mitigate!!! It still goes on your driving record and your insurance will go up!! For the $70 or so an average ticket costs, it is worth it to fight it and take the risk of losing rather than saving money on your ticket but having your insuarnce go up. Since I have driven, I have never gotten into an accident that was my fault, and I am a safe driver at least in my own eyes. Because I have #1 driven smartly(i.e. know where cops hide and learn to see them before they see me) to avoid getting pulled over; #2 don't have any flash on my car (rims, bodykits, wings, or bass); and #3 contested (and won) every ticket that cops have written me; I only pay $65 a month for full coverage and I am only 23 and single.
Dude I am sorry that your parents are chewing on you for the ticket. When and if I ever have kids, I won't care about the tickets they get; I will only want to see that they are safe, aware drivers that don't get into or cause accidents.

Now that you all have reminded me of tickets, I was getting 2-3 speeding tickets a year from the age of 16 until about a year and 1/2 ago (age 22)....I worked for an Insurance agecy, and my rates were/are decent...but the fine amounts always get me
Doing 100!
Sorry to say but maybe this will keep your dumbass alive a little longer. No offense but what in the hell where you thinking? Just got your license, you don't really know how to drive and you decide that you are going to open up your car to see what it will do. Do you REALLY think that you can control your car like a race driver and that your skills are that good? You just started driving and barely have any experience. Hell, I'VE RACED on many tracks and I still wouldn't feel comfortable doing what I do at a track on the street. Do you know why? IT'S UNPREDICTABLE OUT THERE! At least on the track you can control the flow of traffic and what is supposed to happen.
Driving is just like riding a motorcycle: The second you loose respect and stop fearing that machine is when it will kill you. Not saying that you can't push it to its limits but there are a lot of things that you can't handle while you are on that machine Throw in that you were doing this on public roads and you have another factor of uncertainty- all the oter drivers.
We all feel sad when these younger drivers are getting killed or end up killing people when they are going way over the speed limit. I'm sick of hearing about it. It gives the younger generation of people a bad rap and it is just plain stupid. You want to haul *** against someone then take it to the tracks. Go on a grudge night at the 1/4 or rent out a road course (ROAD ATLATA or similar) and do your battles there. I make it a point never to race on the street in excess speeds for this fact. I do a 0-60 stint in the 55 and let it be done with. My car maybe fast as hell with a SC but I don't let that go to my head on the street. If someone wants to have a go at anything faster than 60 then I just say meet me at the 1/4 or RA and we'll go from there.
I might be good but I am not betting my life that anyone else on the road has a clue on how to drive their car 1/4 as good as I can (can change lanes while giving a turn signal, can look before turning, can slow down before hitting somebody, can stay in their lanes, etc...)
Just my .02

Re: Doing 100!
My insurance was dirt cheap for me being only 18 years old ($44.00 a month) until I bought my 300ZX...Now I'm broke as hell, paying $126 a month...ouch...but the car is paid off in April, so then I"ll be happy.

You probably realize u made a mistake now...
At 16, I had a permit and if I ever drove it was with someone, either my father, brother, instructor, older friend with a license... I went through drivers education and got my license at 17, then got the car, and as I started driving, I'll tell you, I did a lot of stupid ****. Luckily all the tickets I ever got were either parking tickets or 2 tickets which I got a break on from the judge and fought them off. Driving that fast is NOT necessary, I don't need to drive fast, especially around NYC where speed limits are no more then 50 mph.
You better talk it out with your father, but before you do that, make sure you learned your lesson. I hope you get your car back bruh, ease off the pedal too...

All I can say is that if you have respect for the car than you can speed. Know what you're doing first. I took to heart every piece of info. or advice on drving at high speeds and it paid off. I was doing 120 or so when I was 16 and 17 and never came close to a wreck cause I did it in safe places with very few people around me and in good conditions.
people definitely have opinions about speeding
Its kind of funny that people have such opinions when it comes to speeding. I got chastised by a few people when I blew my engine speeding, but I haven't ever gotten into a accident and I am a safe aware driver. The reason I hate speed limits so much is that the reason they exist on freeways is because people thought we were going to run out of gas in the 70's and after that the cops found out just how profitable highway robbery can be. How come cops have quotas of traffic tickets that they write each month? Its all about getting more money from people. Cops should not be waiting in packs, hiding behind bushes, and wait for me to fly by; they should be protecting the general public from the drug dealers that live 5 blocks away. I pay taxes for the express purpose that I get protection from criminal activity from the P.D., not so they can tax me more to drive how I feel like driving.
I am surprised there are maxima enthusiasts who feel like being limited to 60 mph is just fine. You guys shoud go join AAA and get yourself a Ford Taurus......because you don't buy a great car like the maxima and then limit yourself to non-enthusiast driving. Why do people buy porsches and ferraris? C'mon now!! they aren't going 60 mph and only do their thing on the track!!!!!! those cars are too nice to just race!!!!
Just my opinions.........

This kid should slow down at 16 or 17, unless he is an experienced scca racer to the like, he doesn't know squat about driving.
I think the leading cause of death amoung young teenage males is DRIVING ACCIDENTS.
If you want to be another statisitic, go ahead and speed, but stay away from my family and friends. Try a telephone pole or something.

Clarification
I do not advocate for a new driver to be speeding or putting themselves into situations where they aren't experienced enough to react quickly, etc. I occasionally go really fast in my car but my ranting is mostly about the stupid tickets (imo) for 80 in a 60. I would say that I don't drive much over 80, but sometimes I will wrap it up on certain stretches of road when the conditions are suitable for driving fast (straight road, light traffic, no wet roads or visibility issues) I have driven for 7 years now and I tend to do about 80 on the freeway which of course opens me up to tickets. BUT, there are those who aren't safe at 60 such as those old beaters who don't have brakes and their tires are bald. What they have done is taken the lowest common denominator with speed limits. Some people have cars that are well maintained and the drivers can safely drive faster. I worry about those old blue haired grandmas in their crown victorias that go 55. I got rearended about 2 years ago by one of those so I worry about people who aren't aware of their driving, unlike me.

I would have to say that I agree fully with Czar on the cops and speeding issue. I hate the fact that cops have quotas, and even more the people that deny it. You can mention quotas to some people and they say something to the effect that quotas are illegal. Well no ****, but they (cops) still have them. It always seems that cops here where I live are only out to bust you on a Sunday morning going to church. I see wreckless drivers all the time during busy 5:00 traffic and I wonder "where are all the ****ing cops when you need 'em!?" The old people thing really unerves me too. I think if you're over 60 you should have to take a driving test, just like new drivers do the first time, every time you renew your license. I'll probably get flamed for this but the majority of accidents I've seen involving young drivers, around here in Midland, Texas, usually involves old people whether it's the teenager's fault or not. I've been on our Teen Court juries around here where we sentence these "wreckless" teenager and most of the wrecks involved old people pulling out in front of them or hitting the brakes real hard, resulting in a rear end collision. It's ********. I'm a safe driver and hardly go over the speed limit anymore because of speeding tickets (I've only had two). I also am a very defensive driver.
Old people and sunday mornings....
I guess my prejudice comes from the fact that I got rearended by a senior citizen in traffic. They had left plenty of room but the reaction time just wasn't there when everyone stopped fast. I saw him coming and I put my head on the headrest, but it still messed me up and I was sore for a while, and my car was not pretty at all.
I got pulled over on a Sunday morning on the way to church once about 2 years ago. I was on the freeway and not really thinking about how fast I was driving because traffic was light. I wasn't going fast enough for me to be looking for cops and he snuck up on me from behind. As soon as the lights came on I pulled over, but I was still in a good mood for some reason. It must have rubbed off because, after he checked me out, he just said that I was going about 75 and he just wanted me to keep it down.... must have been the beginning of the month to not get a ticket for that.... or maybe the fish on the back of my car.

I do about 10-15 over the speed limit at very most. I don't have a radar/laser detector so I am not willing to risk a ticket and higher insurance rates since I am a dependant. When I get a good job, I will get one and think about it, but for now I just can't go faster.
Do I like doing the speed limit? Heck no.
Should I trade in my Maxima for a Ford Taurus? Give me a break! How original. All enthusiasts here aren't all speed demons. Some of us have seen enough stuff already to keep us from going fast in these cars.
Case in point-
A local cop friend and Saleen owner/enthusiast was driving his car late at night. This thing was awesome, I've seen it and sat in it personally. 95 S351R (with supercharger) full rollcage, racing seats, harnesses, etc. You name it he had. it. He was a part of the local race group who battled it out on Road Atlanta. Late one night he and a couple of friends decided to take this thing out and really strech its legs. Doing well over 100 he lost control and hit another while splitting his own in half before coming to rest upside a concrete highway wall. The car was a total loss, the front half of the car wasa was found about 100 feet from the rear end. Both driver and occupants of both cars did not survive the crash. I saw the car when it was brought back to a local Mustang performance parts shop that I frequent and it was a horrible mess. And this car was more built for speed than our Maximas. This was by far the worst accident that I seen and is sobering every time I think about speeding.
Don't let your confidence get to you it will kill you.

Seriously, slow down..... I learned my lesson...
I totally learned my lesson a few months back.
I was driving my baby super black G20 on the freeway
a little too fast... Basically hydroplaned, lost control, oversteered, hit 2 cars, and flew off the freeway. Good thing there was something to land on or I wouldn't be around to talk about this. Next thing you know, I've got 1 totalled car, a lawsuit, and a set of paranoid parents.
Trust me, slow down... if not for yourself, do it for everybody else. First, you're giving us Maximas a bad name, and second, you're endagering practically everybody else on the road. You're probably wondering.. how does my speeding affect everybody else? I'm a good driver? Well, as you shoot by Mr Senior Citizen, watch as he panics, swerves to the left, swerves to the right, and kills everybody on the freeway.
Ok... I'm still waiting on my Maxima (replacement for the G20).. I cant wait for it next week.. I'll have me a large, comfortable, easy to drive sedan, instead of my dumb ol' Mr2. It's not as good as you think. No bass, no legroom, no cargo space, loud assed engine, and waaaaaaay too much understeer/oversteer for me.

Nothing to do with speeding or skill
What seems to be getting lost here is not whether speeding is OK, or if you're "good enough" to go fast. It has to do with who pays the price if you screw up or get caught. Minors are not solely responsible for their actions, no matter what they may like to think. If some child goes out and takes part in vehicular mayhem their parents/guardians are held responsible. You wind up getting hurt and your partents have to get you fixed. You hurt someone else and your partents have to pay to get them fixed. Run afoul of the law and your parents get called. Parents are therfore obligated to keep you from being a perceived, or real, danger to you or someone else.
So far as speeding is concerned; if you don't like the law, get it changed, or challenge it in court. Ignoring it doesn't it make it go away, and is childish.

i understand what brubenstein is saying compltely, becaue that is exactly how my parents think, must be that jewish way or something
. Anyways, yea im 16 and my parents trust me to be not speeding and all, and Czar your opposed to the cops in the bushes as much as me, but theyre there for a reason. They are SUPPOSED to be waiting there until they see the one wreckless person driving at 120 to go after him, whether the person thinks its a safe driving speed or not. Yet i do see what your saying about the quotas, and the peddy crap like going 10 miles over, i think that is just plain pointless.

OK, maybe I should restate my opinion.....
I am 23 and responsible for myself. I don't advocate minors doing extreme speeds at the risk of killing themselves, someone else, or getting in BIG trouble. I mostly am talking about the stupid stuff like getting pulled over for 75-80.... Thats what speed traps are for; they rarely are going to catch someone doing triple digits. Why? Because most speed traps are on heavily traveled roads where the cops get to sample the speeds of many cars. On the roads I speed(extreme), when I speed(extreme) the cops would be foolish to set up speed traps because they would have to wait for 3 minutes between cars. Even if I wanted to I couldn't do 3 digits in traffic; it's impossible unless you are doing some crazy lane changes. I never have been one for crazy lane changing at high speed. Where I like to take my car up is on straight roads with no cars. As far as the G20 wreck, I don't ever drive like that in the rain when there could be a chance for hydroplaning.... I learned my lesson trying to take fast curves in this car at least. The lesson: 3rd gen. maxes have no suspension stock!!! I scared myself last time cuz. it didn't handle like I have been used to at high speeds in my old integra.
I guess it comes down to... To each his own opinion, and I will try not to cause any wrecks with innocents!!!!!!!

Chiming in
From what I am gathering, the lad feels bad enough getting caught for doing 100 in a 65. If I was in his shoes, I would feel worse because the gravity of the situation would have hit when pops threatened to sell the car. Brubenstein, I would do the same thing if I had kids because I want to protect my family and the other people on the roads.
But in my case, I know firsthand what speed can do. Being a cop's kid, I read a lot of the citation books and accident reports. More oft than not, it would involve someone going waaaaay over the limit and/or losing control.
Being a fan of the sport of Auto Racing, I have seen many horrific crashes at 200-300 mph. Remember Adam Petty? An excellent example of a horrific auto racing crash can be found on http://www.nhra.com/movies2000/race2...2_00race21.mov where an experienced Top Fuel pilot lost control of his ride. Even a journalist for a noted car magazine got killed doing 200 in a tricked up Mercedes on a race track.
Granted I am mentioning extreme speeds or extreme vehicles, but the principle remains the same whether you are driving a Geo Metro, Nissan Maxima or a 6,000 horsepower Funny Car or Top Fuel dragster. The point I am trying to make is that you as a driver have to respect the limitations of yourself, your surroundings, the surface you are driving on, and your car. If you don't respect any of those three, the cops will either be in your rear view mirror ready to cite or loading you into a paddy wagon taking you on your final trip to the county morgue or the more tragic combination of all three plus getting slapped with major lawsuits.

I completely agree with jgadlage, in the way that you, like me have no experience at the age of 16! I really want to start racing some cars. The one reason why I know I will NEVER race a car on the streets unless it's a 0-60 test at the lights or something remotely 'controlled' is because I've experienced bad driving skills. Go to the track!
Last year at one point in time, I was in a car with my mom and we got hit by some guy going 80 in a 45 zone at the SIDE.
you will NEVER KNOW what a car crash is like until you get in one.
It was the scariest thing that ever happend to me and it taught me a lesson for life. Speed kills, when put in the hands of unexperienced drivers who drive with other careless people. It's just not worth it... by the way we both made it out alive however the other driver broke his leg, my mom hit her head, and I got serious whiplash, and for what?
