How can you tell if you were running rich or lean from looking at used spark plugs?

How can you tell if you were running rich or lean from looking at used spark plugs?

Ok, so I replaced my OEM platinums to copper 1-step colder spark plugs and everything seems fine. Now I took a picture of the 10K used (3K sc'ed used) platinums which I'll link in a few hours, but they look like they have a rusted brownish color to them with little black color around the diameter of the top of the thread? I truly think I'm runing lean since I got the 0115 right bank lean code right before I changed them out, so are these the symptoms? What would it look like if I were to run rich?

Black is rich.. White is lean..

But why would you wanna use sparkplugs to read fuel when you have gauges?

The a/f gauge is pretty much useless and the EGT gauge is more precise but not perfectly accurate either.. if you have a rich/lean condition your gauges won't necessarily tell you. Depends on how rich, and how lean, and when (and for how long) the condition lasts.

From that site, it looks like your plugs are MMT fouled. Is that possible in your case?
