It can never hurt to change it early. Since it is getting broken in, change around where you are (the 1000 mile mark), and then every 3,000 if using regular oil. Synthetic can be changed at a longer interval (I believe about 5,000). The main reason to change at 1000 miles is to get any metal particles out that may be flowing through the oil, which could potentially cause damage.

Uconn 411, has this pretty much down.

actually, from my shop teachers experience, the first 4000 miles will be quite oil consuming.
His plan generally goes like this:
1. oil change when he gets home
2. oil change at 200 miles
3. oil change at 500 miles
4. oil change at 1000 miles
5. oil change at 4000 miles
and every 3000 after that. the reason is because at the inital breakin, there will be lots of wear as everything is beginning to align into place. He also notes that generally doing this plan is being on the really safe side of things, but hes also gotten over 250k out of all of his engines because of regular maintence.

no matter the oil, change every 3k. unless you have longer than 30min commutes, stick to 3k miles.

MrGone...I agree..on a new engine I think it is prudent to change early..as soon as you get home may be a bit overkill. I go 500 to1K on the orig. oil then change it at 2-3K intervals..It is the best cheap insurance you can buy for your engine.

On my MR2 I change it every 500 to 1k miles mainly because I don't drive it. It has 31K miles on it and the oil has been changed 25+ times

My buddy used to work at a Jiffy Lube and would change his oil once a week on his RX-7! As he said, "It purred like a kitten".

I would also change the oil at the 1000 mile mark for the reasons stated above. Then every 3k OR 3 months...which ever comes first.
