Crazy Speedo Needle/91 Maxima SE

My 91 Maxima SE has 75k miles on it. Recently the speedo needle started getting funky - around town it sometimes doesnt show any speed. On the hwy at 70mph, the needle bounces around at around 30, then 50, then 20 etc.

What's up fellas ? Is it a sensor somewhere.

we have a 3rd gen forum just acouple of spaces below this, you would prolly get more info there. And use the search, look for speedo problems or something like there. There should be a lot of info on it.

It sounds like the power to the speedometer/needle is a weak connection making it turn on and off real fast. It happens so fast that it makes it seem like the needle is jumping around.

speedo fix

I have posted about this before. Take off the speedometer sensor on the tranny and use a vise to press the black plastic cap back in to the metal casing of the sensor. It should be fixed. you may be able to press it back in with out taking it off the car but becarfull not to smash it. good luck!

Could also be dry solder joints in the speedo unit. Very common for Nissans.

Thanks Folks!

I'll take out the sensor and check it out, first. Hopefully that will do it , but you know how it goes with intermittent problems.

If that doesnt do it, its into the dash cluster. Ugh.

Thanks again.

MadMaxBrent, do you know if there is a link or picture(s) describing which joints should be re-soldered. My speedo is nuts too.

Chris92,

I haven't seen any pictures and unfortuantely didn't take any myself. The main joints to solder are around the microprocessor but it is prudent to do all of the solder joints just in case. It is only a 5 minute job anyway so no great drama.

Brent.
