Who Has Optima Yellow Top Battery?

For any of ya who have the battery how much did you buy it for? And how did ya install the battery because i heard its bigger than the regular battery and the tie-down doesn't fit? I think Pepboys is selling it for $109.

I've got a yellow top. It fits but if I recall correctly you have to get extended (longer) battery tie-down rods.

$109, that's awesome. It's like $160 here! I would have gotten one when I got a battery two days ago if I could have found one that cheap!

I got a really good deal on mine. I paid $45 each for 6 Yellow tops. I met a guy that was using them for EV testing. Batteries were drained and recharged only 3 times over the course of month. Four of my buddies got there yellow tops from me and I sold two to a couple of org members a few years ago. To this day, not a single one of them has had a problem so far. I'm curious to see how long this will last.

Go to www.optimabatteries.com to read the differences. I just know that the yellow top is better for people that use a lot of power at one time.

I just put a piece of plywood wrapped in plastic (to keep moisture out) under the battery.

Works great.....

paid $159 for mine....now I feel like I got raped. Too bad there's no Pep-Boys in Seattle.

yellow top is a deep cycle battery....usually used along with a lot of aftermarket electronics.

red top is more of a powerful starting battery (more CCA) for little to no aftermarket electronics.

i got my yellow top for $190 canadian under a group deal
that comes out to like $130USD so you have an amazing deal on your hands.

Yes I am but I had to add a rubber washer underneath the tie down where it makes contact on top of the battery due to the large bulge right where the tie down makes contact. It just doesn't allow the tie down to sit level. What about you?

I used random nuts from my toolbox to make spacers on the OEM setup. The battery is good, but I'm not sure how good it is for cold starts.

I have two yellow top Optima, one in front and one in the trunk. I did modify my stock tie-down cause they were too long. I just took it out, measured how high the battery, then cut from the bottom leaving enough to rebend it to make the j hook. I later replaced the bar with a 1 1/2 inch wide aluminum bar.

a friend told me that the battery is only good for people running a lot of electronics when the car is off. When car is on, a good alternator is recommended...is this true?

yellow top good for when car is off

alternator good for when car is on

The yellow top is a deep cycle battery. The value of this battery is for when/if you have an extensive audio system and you play it for long periods of time with the car off, such as when competing at audio shows or if you like to jam while detailing your car. If your car is running, your electrical system is being fed by the alternator. The only time the battery comes into play is when the car is off or you draw more amps than the alternator can supply. Needless to say, you have to have a serious audio system to necessitate an upgraded alternator. I've had your average two amp systems in several cars and never needed the alternator upgrade. The red top is a robust battery. It's like a normal battery but better. I've known a couple of people who said they have used them as long as 10 years with no problems. If you need a deep cycle, get the yellow top. If you don't, you could ge either way and not hurt anything. I bought mine from Advance Auto and the yellows and reds were the same price.

I'd like to make a corrective statement. If your car is running, the alternator gives power only above a certain RMP level...generally 1,500-2000 is the minimum RPM's at which you are actually using electricity from the alternator, not the battery. Hence when you drain your battery, get a jump, and then have to drive around for 30 mins on the highway.

Blue is the smallest, Red is the middle and the Yellow one is the Largest of the Three so you could get either of the Three, I have the Red and am Running 2 amps off it and have no problems.

The battery can also act as a capacitor with large stero systems keeping your lights from dimming when the subs hit. Also the battery absorbs the spikes that your alternator creates, which is why your car won't run without one, without the battery to absorb the spikes it would screw up your ecu.

Is it true the yellow top is at Pep Boys. To the best of my knowledge they only care red top Optima batteried. Red tops run aroun 110, yellow top around 180. Correct me if I am wrong. I think there is a lot of pricing and availibility misinformation going on in this thread.
