It is on underneath the dash near the gas pedal. There is a plastic cover with 2 plastic screws that just pop out. Very easy to get to. Just have a good flashlight

Your car DOES NOT have a top speed limiter. 4th Gen SEs are unlimited!

Also, the ECU is in the same place for all 4th gens...

My question is, where are you driving 118? Please let me know so I don't drive on the same streets you drive on.

If you have a limiter, you dont have an SE. Maybe the ECU was switched for some reason...

You sure you actually have an SE?.. If you bought the car used its pretty possible its a GXE with some sawblades / spoiler / white gauges that were added later.

either you dont have an SE or you dont have a limiter.

thats the way it is.

there are other reasons your car can run into a brick wall as far as acceleration. change the fuel filter. turn OD off if you have an auto. it sounds like you need a tune up.

but you DONT have a computerized limiter if you have an SE. something else is obviously stopping you.

Look at your gas pedal. To the right of the pedal is the black console right? There are a couple of plastic rivets that pop out at the very bottom on each side. Pop them and remove the bottom piece of the console. Behind it you will see a silver rectangular box. That is the ECU. If you need to access the other side do the same thing on the passenger side.

Hope this helps.

I have this same problem on a 97SE which I am sure is an SE but it has a clear limiter at 118 where acceleration hits a wall. I could never figure it out.

IMO, just leave it alone, until you can go over 118 in the 1/4 mile or you take your car to an auto-x track with a huge @ss straightaway, it really isn't necessicary to go that fast.

Does the car just stop accelerating? Or does it violently jerk and the engine cuts down to idle?

The speed limter cuts fuel and drop the engine to idle. If you just stop accelerating, you are just topped out, no limiter.

I have a 95 se and i've had it up to 140. There is no limiter on an SE. If you do have a limiter you don't have a full se. You either have a gxe with extra's or an SE with a GXE or GLE computer. As far as finding it, it's really easy. Theres a kick plate on the drivers right side (to the right of the gas pedal) take it off and the ECU is the silver box (rectangular). But without taking it out you can't tell much from just looking at it.

You dont have a limiter, your just topping out. Try resseting your ECU and checking foR ghost codes. Its possbile your in fail safe mode from an engine problem.it possible. Try drving with O/D off and once u hit near 118 turn it back on.. see wat happens,,, my 2 cents

It feels as though I have let off the gas pedal, never checked the tachomoter. And im a 5-spd so O/D wouldnt do much =)..anyways, no codes and I have replaced my knock sensor. I was nowhere near redline in 5th and car runs well otherwise. Its too much of a coincidence that its happened more than once at 118 and the speed limiter happens to be there...

spped limiter kicks at 120 (i beilieve) the sends car to idle by shutting fuel pressure. this means your RpM would drop instantly..you would then slow down... if ur held at a steady 118 with steady RPM and a consistent climb to redline then ur just topped out. BTW...wat color are your door handles??? i know i know..just answer the question

If your car feels like someone shut off your engine when you hit a certain speed then you have a limiter, if it simply stops accelerating you just topped it out for that gear. The first time I hit my governor I thought I blew my motor, it's quite violent and quite sudden.

A few have mentioned that the ECU is right of the gas pedal. Although that is correct, you need to access it from the passenger side footwell.
Remove the kick plate and there will be a 10mm bolt holding a large connector with a lot of wires onto the silver metal ECU case.

This is where you'll find the pink/blue wire to cut. (make sure you get the right one!) Follow Ben's ECU mod for further instructions
Link here
I did this, and wired in a toggle switch, so it doesn't trip the CEL when I'm not using it.
This way I only need to break the speed limiter circuit for short periods of time - the truth is I haven't used it apart from testing to see if it worked right after doing the mod.
here's a pic of the switch (red toggle switch next to fuse box panel)

If its an SE and an auto I guarantee your not hitting the limiter. Whats happening is the car is shifting into 4th gear which explains the rpm drop and the sudden stop of acceleration. 4th gear is not made for quick acceleration and therefore it seems like the car has totally stoped. I thought the same thing at first with my GLE but when I kept flooring it after it shifted into 4th it slowly climbed all the way up to 129 where I had to stop cause of a car. I don't think it was going much faster anyway. Turning off Overdrive helps accelerate because it doesnt shift into 4th gear and stays in 3rd gear up to a higher rpm thus giving you more acceleration.
