Waxing RIMS

To all,

Now that its finally getting warmer in the NE, and the rims are coming back on, I would like to know about waxing them.

I have giovanna corsicas 17s and it has a polished lip. It looks like there is clearcoat on the entire rim. If I were to use Meguiars wax to wax up the rim, would there be anything that can cause damage to the rim?

Should I wax my rims or not?

If so, what is the best product I can use?

I heard that waxing rims are good for easily getting brake dust off

Thanks all

gmax

As far as I know the wax shoun't hurt the rims at all. A friend of mine told me about waxing my rims. It works pretty well to make it easier to get the brake dust and stuff off if you keep up with it.

i have the stock SE rims, and i wax them, just because it gives them a decent shine, and it makes the rims easier to wash next time around. I use meguire's rim cleaner, and mother's rim wax.

I wax my rims every month or so. Gives them a nice shine, keeps them clean longer and makes them easier to clean. I have painted rims, so that is all I can speak for.

Which Meguiars did you use. I went on the website and see three different products???

Also is this really safe for clearcoated rims. Will it get off the brake dust? I am jsut very nervous around my rims. Ive heard both good and bad about all these products. I just would like my rims to look like the first day i got em, without all the brake dust.

I also want a nice sheet of wax on there for protection.

What do you guys think about this from Mothers:

CLEAR COAT WHEEL POLISH

Clear-coated wheels will dull with time-the surface is a clear coat, which is just like paint. You polish and wax the rest of the paint on your car, right? Give your clear-coated and painted wheels the same respect with Mothers® Clear Coat Wheel Polish. Designed specifically for wheel coatings, it will remove minor scratches and blemishes and polish out all the little imperfections. Your wheels will sparkle just as bright as your paint-give them some Mothers®' love with Clear Coat Wheel Polish.

#05108, 8 oz.

Is it any good, trustworthy??? Anybody tried it?

Polish /= Wax. That mothers stuff sounds good if you have scratches to get out, but it's not going to PROTECT anything.

I'm sure any wax is going to be safe on your rims. I doubt any rim clearcoat is going to be more fragile than car clearcoat. Mothers Wx is aight but any good wax (Zymol, Blitz, Ardex, etc.) would also work.

I realized this when i sent it that it said polish and not wax, doh!!!!. one last thing then, to get the brake dust off what do you guys recommend??
anything from mothers or meguiars??

I like these two brands and trust them but dont know as far as rims are concerned.

I like waxing my rims and car, because not only does it keep it shinnying, but when it rains it keeps water spots off both the car and my rims, and i don't have to wash both as much because all the dirt is surface, and l just white everything down with a rag like once or twice a week

it's called meguire's hot rims or something like that. It comes in a purple spray bottle. I use that, the mother's rim wax, and then meguire's tire shine for the tires. That stuff last longer than armorall on steroids.

so you guys swear by these meguiars hot rims??

is it good for clearcoat, it says that it is neutrally pH balanced, yada yada yada but does anybody who has clearcoated rims ever try this stuff with a noticeable difference (no more brake dust)and no problems afterwards, like the clearcoat being eaten away or the like?

I have a bottle of Meguires and it is pretty potent, almost like acid since it bubbles on contact. It's as strong as that Quick Silver the Armor All use to sell. It does clean but I think it is pretty harse on clear coat rims. I have a 98 SE with the stock rims and most of the clearcoat has been eaten away as far as I can tell. I will say this stuff cleans my rims better then the more mild cleaners.

It's not going to look any different, if it looked different, do you think we would be saying that it's safe and ok to do? Does wax make your paint look different?

To clean my rims I use Eagle 1 A-Z (stock SE rims for now). You have to use something strong. Although, when I get my rims in a few weeks I am going to try to keep them waxed and clean so I don't have to use too much rim cleaner....that stuff is pretty harsh.

i wax my wheels with Meguiars Cleaner Wax. the wheels are silver painted. it helps to get the brake dust off. the only difference in appearance is that they look a little more glossy and have that slightly wet look. only take 10 minutes to do them.

sorry the pic is just a little out of focus.

I don't know about using wax on your rims but I know first hand a bout mothers polish and that WORKS!!! It protects the rims from the brake dust, road grime and makes it easier the next time around. It'll make you not have to use wheel cleaners anymore cause that stuff is harsh.

I said it before, I'll say it again...polish /= Wax. All polish does is remove material, it does not protect anything. It might make things easier to clean by removing other dirt and flattening scratches that trap dirt...but it will not protect anything. Polish is just a liquidy-media with very very very fine grit in it...everything that goes on comes off when you buff it.

What do you guys think about P21S? Ever heard of it? I am thinking of getting this stuff or Hot RIms by Meguiars, i want something with no acid and nothing that can destroy my rims but will get rid of that nasty brake dust.

Anybody used P21S and can attest to how good/bad it is? Especially on clearcoated rims??

What about Meguairs?

Thanks

waxing wheels will never hurt them. i have 18" zenetti vega`s and i wax them with my car wax (mother`s or maguire`s) . gives them a nice shine and protects them. i just recently putr them back on after winter and waxed them up.

I own my own detailing business, and I often wax my own wheels. It repels water as well as protects the clear coat, if you have a high quality wax (i.e. Meguiars, Mothers)the brake dust particles will be 100 times easier to remove when you wash the car again.

I waxed my wheels before I put them on. I used zymol. The brake dust comes off so much easier than before. I'll be waxing the wheels again, when I wax the car
