Would it be ok to changethe timing on almost stock VG?

My car has been running real crappy lately. My friend is going to bring over his timing light so that we can check to make sure it's still where it's stock. All I've added performancewise is a jim wolf high flow intake, nothing else. But would it be a bad idea to advance the timing ~5 degrees?(and if it was working normal would it)?

ummmm, solve your ORIGINAL problems first before you advance the timing.
