Shipping a car?

I plan to purchase a car from a friend of mine in Atlanta, GA. The problem? I live in Richmond, VA. Driving it myself is not an option, for reasons I dont feel like explaining here. SO... how hard is it to ship a car? How expensive? I would think it wouldnt be so bad since its not a terrible distance (maybe 8 hour drive). What have been your experiences with this? Anything to watch for? Any recommended companies? etc, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

one of our members had his car shipped from NY - CA and they stole **** out of it

I did ATL - VA in 5 hours, ATL - CT in 12 1/2 hours .. you leave 8 am from ATL .. you will be in VA in no time..

since you driving it is out of the question for reasons you don't feel like explaining, you should get the seller to drive it to you and you pay the friend's one-way air back to GA.

It'd be cheaper, faster, safer, and all around better than giving your car to someone you don't know, so they can stuff it with unmentionables (you don't think they'll waste all that space on the drive do you?), to put on god knows what kind of truck, with a driver who may be trustworthy...

If your friend can drive it to you, have him/her.

or you could have your friend drive to fla and put it on Amtrak,

although its probably cheaper to do what 2k2wannabe said. I think Amtrack wants like $500 for you and your car, not sure about car alone.

Cost me $800 to ship a Ranger PU from Floida to Arizona on an open car hauler. I bought the truck on ebay and used DAS shipping. Your charges should be a lot cheaper.

just checked... less than $200 for a one-way ticket from VA to ATL. Little more than one tank of gas (530 miles all highway) $35. Something 'extra' for the seller's trouble... round up to $300 for you to pay one-way ticket and gas for the trip.

Or ship it and it goes into a black hole where you don't know what happens to it for a week while it's on a truck/train (hopefully) and it's more expensive.

I paid $1000 to ship from AZ to northern New Hampshire. The guy was nice, babies the car, and got it there 3 days early. AAA-Advantage Auto Movers

I had mine ship from CA to FL for about 8-900. Many years ago companies use to offer driving your car from point A to B for a minimum price. Or as mentioned you can use a open car hauler or enclosed hauler (more money) Folks who ship exotic cars tend to use the enclosed car haulers. I've shiped cars twice and both times is arrived with everything in the car, use your common sense not to leave anything in car car besides the spare tire and jack. Your biggest concern will be the liability factor. Find out what's their liability clause if you have to file a claim. With most shipping companies you're liable for the first X amount in repairs and they will cover the rest. Trying to get them to cover the rest is like pulling tooth, so read the fine print.

Well I looked at DAS shipping, which appears to be the one ebay recommends, and it seems good to me, they insure the vehicle for its blue book value, etc.. what do you guys think? Anyone else dealt with them?
