Is it bad to go over 85 MPH for a long period of time?

you might be thinking about break-in... that's when they recommend you vary your rpm/speed (and even that's debatable).
Once you get past 1,000 miles, you can drive at 90 in 6th (or 5th but it would waste gas) all day. 90 in 6th is less than 3k rpm. You'd do damage if you went 40 in 1st, but 90 in 6th won't hurt anything.

manual 3.0 5th gen is at 3200 rpm at 80mph, and at 4000 rpm at about 90mph. Guess what I just made a 1200 mile trip last weekend and my RPMs barely dropped below 4000RPms...gas mileage sucked at 20MPG though

in order to sustain speeds of 90+ in FL, NV, TX and so forth, you're going to need a tranny cooler. You might go into safe mode and have to pull over let it cool (and restarting car to get out of safe mode).
I've gone 100ish in cool weather for over an hour. Obviously I was in a place where that is acceptable and speed limits arent enforced.

5am, about the 15th hour of a 17 hour trip. My max sustained 75+ for 17 hours, lemans style - only stopping for max & driver fuel. Didnt say 100ish for an hour wasnt nerve racking.. I knew I *could* be stopped. But I also felt better in the fact I was being passed frequently!

I go about 85 all the time too, thats why I asked. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't run the engine down.

B&M tranny coolers are good. You can get a Hayden from Pep Boys for pretty cheap, about $45. They need a little more time for warming up than the B&M because of the design. So if you are in colder weather, I'd go with the B&M.
I've done over a 100 for 3.5 hours from Las Vegas to Los Angeles a few times. My 2k auto still runs strong,

if your going to tampa from here you should be just fine without one. work on some actual performance mods first so you can keep up with the 3.5's.

Yep, made a one day business trip from Houston to Austin and back again...around 266 miles total at 80+ mph. Engine was fine, economy wasn't.

Regarding running at steady 80+ for extended periods - as said above, no problem. Engine rpm is low, and you're not heating up the wheel bearings etc. excessively.

That's funny, I recently did the exact same trip. On the way up, 90+ most of the way (I was running late) - no problems, bad gas mileage. On the way back, about 85 the entire way, and about 24 mpg (which is GREAT for me, since I usually drive in the city and see something like 16.

So now we'll ask, why do you ask? You seem awfully interested in this, like you plan to drive over 90mph for hours on end....
In normal operation you do not need a tranny cooler. It won't hurt, but 90% of the time it won't "help" either (meaning you're not going to 'gain' anything if you install it). Do you think you drive like the other 10%? Are you a road-warrior salesman (I have a friend who drove 75,000 miles last year)? What's your story?
Like slickrick said, put the money toward some real performance mods instead.
Oh, and they range in price from around $275 - $1,000 depending on what you want.

FHP is usually easy to avoid on 75, so I can see how that is possible.
