Woes about my paint :(

Guys I have multiple chips on my hood, and some minor scratches on some panels, I've tried everything, from wax to Scratch X remover and rubbing compound. Nothing seems to work what do I do? Also I noticed that the rubbing compound left some sort of residue on the area I was working on, will water remove this? My car is jet black what would you recommend me doing? Please help thanks .

I hope you're washing the car before you try any kind of polish...if not.......not good. Not sure why I get the vibe that you might not be...spidey sense maybe...

In any case, you cannot polish out scratches that go through the paint. If you can feel it with your fingernail, or if you can see the (white) primer there is nothing to do except get it painted (unless you want to try touch up paint...).

As far as the ScratchX residue...you did buff it once it dried right? It shouldn't be leaving any residue behind at all. Perhaps you let it sit too long and it dried...in that case just use more polish to get it off. You DID wax the part you polished too right?

BTW...soap and water is never going to hurt your car (well maybe if you don't wax it after polishing it, and don't dry it right away it may etch but...) just try the car wash soap (never dish soap, never anything but car wash soap) and water...

Welcome to the world of Mininas.

You can't "buff" out nicks. Just try not to follow people that close and hope for the best. Or get it repainted and then apply those clear thin plastic "bra" for the front end.

Well its the compound residue thats not coming off and yes I did wash it before I applied the scratch X, I cleaned off a small area of scratches before I applied the compound though, will water hopefully remove the residue left behind by the compound?

Water won't help, use a polishing compound to go over it, OR try using the scratch x again, but this time remove it the moment it dries. Had this happen once, used my second suggestion to remove it. I have the Deep forest grean color myself.

What I think happens is, when using Scratch removers and the like, especially with darker colors, your basically grinding into the paint. If you leave the stuff on for too long, the product dries in into the fresh scrapes you just made to "blend" whatever scratch your trying to take out. Which is why I think going back over the spot properly fixed the problem.

Whatever option you choose, go over it all with some good wax when your done.

I haven't had the opportunity to try it myself, but when I get the money, I plan on giving this system a try for the big scracthes on my car

http://www.langka.com./newsite/index2.html

I've heard a lot of good things about it.

Always buff the polish off as soon as it hazes.

That Langka stuff...I'm usually extremely skeptical of this type of stuff...but I looked around and read a few decent reports. I dunno...might be worth trying?

If you keep rubbing the rubbing compound for too long in one spot you will start removing the clearcoat, giving the area a glazy look to it.

I've made that mistake on my old car...

But if that's the case try polishing and waxing, it can help a bit.

Take care
