Depends. Are you planning on running your stuff with the car off? Then get a yellow top. Do you have A LOT of things to power, ie, neon, lots of amps, etc? Then get the Yellow. Otherwise, I think te Red Top should be fine.

From what I know, the Yellow top is designed to be connected to your alternator. It likes to be charged, whereas a Red Top couldn't care less. Red Tops are used in huge stereo cars who have multiple subs & amps which require lots of power. The reds can be run from the trunk and drained all the way. Once they are dead you can trickle charge them at home and do it again.

Actually its the other way around... A red top is just any other battery out there. The yellow top is the one stereo people install because there safer, they can be mounted upside down, they have many hours of backup life.

Heres the site........

<a href="http://www.optimabatteries.com/products/main.htm">Optima</a>
from what I see, it looks like the yellow top is for "extra" applications (neon, stereos, etc.), and the Red Top is a "starting" battery, but probably still powerful enough for minor voltage applications.

Don't forget the orange top ->

It's the same as the red top but has reversed posts. It fits the maxima better than the red top.

Heh,

as far as I know the yellow is the big one that people with large stereos go far. It made a significant power upgrade from the stock battery. It says it's designed to be run as a secondary battery, but it works just fine as the only battery under the hood.

Actually, the red top is not just any other battery out there. it uses the same tech. and it can be mounted upside down too. furthermore, the redtop has more CCA's (800) as opposed to the yellow top's 750 CCA. the redtop has 120min reserve capacity whereas the yellowtop has 124min. so... 4 more min, woo hoo... go to http://www.optimabatteries.com and read about it.

Since we're talking about Optimas and my battery just died today, how much are they running right now? Also do you know if the Optima Gel cells work longer or are any more effective during cold weather? Any other suggestions on battery brand?
Thanks.

Im running the YELLOW TOP battery in my max now. I had the RED TOP at first but it didnt have enough juice for my stereo system, the lights dimmed all over the place. Now with the Yellow i have minimal or no dimming at all! Plus i plan on adding a high power stobe kit x6 bulbs and more neons for the 2001 spring/summer show season.

Yellow

I chose Yellow because of the extra strength and features. I have a lot of stuff to power, and the price difference wasn't huge.

I'd get the Yellow.
