Auto trannies tend to die if you drive it hard. Then again, you might replace your clutch a few times in that time period... but I'd say 5speed is more reliable...

Standard are always way more reliable, less parts to break, and easier to fix. That's why my family only has manual tranny cars.

i'm not too sure which one is, i've dealt with both but heard more problems with 5 speed than auto. So i would say auto is more reliable especially since even with normal driving u really cant hurt an auto tranny while an unexperienced person can hurt a 5 speed tranny even if he's not beating on it just trying to get the car to go riding the clutch and stuff...

I seem to remember a post about certain year Maxima 5 speeds being prone to problems, but I don't know which year it was. #1 Auto tranny killer is high fluid temps, and mixing that with poor maintenence ie, not changing (burned?) tranny fluid can lead to 'low reliability'. Going along with what mrb23 says, it depends a lot on how you drive it, too.

WORST THREAD IN A WHILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you DO realize that this is dependent upon:
how one drives
the care given to the transmission (esp. auto fluid changes)
miles driven
weather
and a bunch of other things?

driving style will tell you what's more reliable. unless there are known recalls/problems with a certain type of tranny.

remember, the harder you drive a manual the better at driving you better be. way too many people i know have worn synchros which isn' a cheap fix.
